MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB News story

Mildenhall edge a thriller!!

23 Jul 2018

John has written a report on the 1XI home match against Cambridge Granta. To read John's report please go into the fixtures & results page and click on the match in question.

The 2XI travelled to Braintree on Saturday. Batting first, Mildenhall scored what looked to be a decent total. Skipper Steve Graham returned to batting form with a fantastic innings of 106. Steve was supported by Matt Allen who made 59. There were contributions from Ben Curran (19), Kieren Davis 17 and Gabe Jones (17). The final was 260 for 9. Jackson was the standout bowler for Braintree with 4-45. There were also wickets for Spalding 2-27 and out of this world podshaver Dean Bass (for those of you that don't know Dean makes bats and his company is called Vulcan). Braintree got off to a great start and never looked back. Leech top scoring with 99 and Chalk with 79. Steve Graham took 2 wickets and Matt Allen 3 wickets. Braintree reaching their target with 5 balls to spare. It's easier to be critical looking in from the outside but this writer wonders why a couple of allrounders didn't get a bowl during the Braintree innings. Nevertheless a fine game of cricket and a tight finish.

Better news for the 3XI who enjoyed a comfortable win at home against Eight Ash Green. Mildenhall were put into bat first and lost Neil Clark early for 0. The 3XI opener played on to a delivery from the aptly named Pace. The returning Mark Thurston rode his luck but also played some very fine drives and whips in his innings of 49. The importance of Mark's innings would be highlighted later on in the match. Veteran batsman James Taylor scored 54 and there were good contributions from Duncan Fraser (42) and Matt Heywood (25). For the second week in a row the mid-lower order of the 3XI were blown away by the opposition bowling. Mildenhall finishing with 210 all out from 44.4 overs. Pace with 4-37, Firmin with 4-54 and Goodall with 2-60. Eight Ash Green started relatively well with Parker and Hammond in good form. Parker was run out attempting a suicidal single to Mildenhall skipper Andrew Youngs. Martin Kingdon was back to his best with the ball. Killer returned figures of 4-41 from his 15 overs. Duncan Fraser showed his class with the ball with a superb spell of 3-11. and there were wickets for Martin Taylor and Matt Heywood. Eight Ash Green finishing with 110 all out from 37.1 overs. All of the Eight Ash Green wickets were bowled, lbw, run out and stumped. Plenty of catches were missed in the field by the away side and it cost them dearly. Mildenhall's ability to bowl at the stumps proving to be the deciding factor in the match. A good game of cricket and thanks to the opposition for staying late after the match for a drink and a chat.

The 4XI made the very, very, very long journey to Maldon and came back with all the points. Maldon batted first on a poor surface. Collins was the only batsman who made double figures for the home side. Collins finishing with 42. Maldon were all out for 107 from 26 overs. 4 wickets for skipper and club Chairman Lou Handy, 2 wickets for the impressive Josh Jones, 1 for Raeel Afall, 2for Luke Ellis and one wicket for Muhammed Ubaid. Things didn't start well for Mildenhall as Saunders and Reuben Handy were out quickly. Rhys Daltrey (20) and Ewan Kingdon (29) got things back on track. Mildenhall reaching their target for the lost of 6 wickets from 18.5 overs. A much needed win for the Wamil Way side and hopefully they can build some momentum heading into the last couple of months of the season.
