MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Woolpit on Sat 28 Jul 2012 at 1.00 p.m
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall won by 9 wickets
Match report
Mildenhall 1st team finally got the chance to play cricket after 3 weeks of rained off matches. They hosted league leaders Woolpit who had extended their advantage at the top of the league as a result of Mildenhall’s rained off matches.
After winning the toss Steve Lankester surprised the opposition by inviting them to bat first. However his decision soon paid off as James Holmes, opening the bowling from the river end accounted for both openers with only 9 runs on the board. This brought Woolpit’s overseas professional crease Mike Jones to the crease. He looked in good form as he stroked four boundaries before he was trapped LBW, once again to Holmes. This then sparked a collapse in Woolpit’s middle order as they fell to 43 for 7. Holmes and opening bowler AJ Warraich (3-25) giving nothing as well as taking wickets. It was then a case of damaged limitation for the visitors as their lower order tried to grind out a decent score, however Mildenhall would not let them get away. Frans Bester and Ben Shepperson both taking a wicket a piece before Holmes returned to trap Woolpit’s number 11 LBW with the score on 99. James Holmes finishing with 5-23 and wicket-keeper Karl Holmes taking 4 catches.
In reply Mildenhall opened with the kitchen-fitting duo of Bester & Shepperson. With Woolpit needing early wickets attacking fields were set which produced plenty of run scoring opportunities which were not missed out on. The ball was struck to the boundary regularly as Mildenhall raced towards their target. Shepperson eventually fell for 42, aiming to hit the ball into the Lark, but succeeding in only skying a catch.
This was however to be the only wicket as Azeem Ghumman (11*) joined Bester (41*) to see Mildenhall to a 9 wicket, 20 point victory and send Woolpit home with 0 points to close the gap at the top of division 1.
