MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall 1st X1 won By 112 runs

Match report
Mildenhall 1st X1 travelled down to Elmstead to play against the Grasshoppers on the back of two wins. This looked like a tricky fixture as the home team had a close game the previous week with high flying Sudbury. Mildenhall batted first using the successful early season pairing of Joe Reed and Luke Youngs. Reed quickly took a liking to Michael Burle and took early boundaries off him. D White at the other end had more control and his slow bowling had the run rate pegged back. Adie Garnham replaced Burle after 10 overs and with some good ground fielding Elmstead held Mildenhall at 68 runs off 20 overs. However with the new 10 overs per bowler rule, as soon as White completed his spell Mildenhall began to accelerate and Reed moved passed 50 for the third match running. The more circumspect Youngs also became more purposeful with his shot making and for the second time this year the pair shared a century partnership. Elmstead finally claimed their first success in the 30th over. With the score on 124, Reed after a well-made 71, perished in the deep, caught by P Gates off bowler I Evans. Mildenhalls new Australian coach Steve Taylor had an early let off when he was dropped when on just 3. He then proceeded to take full advantage of his good fortune with a full range of one day strokes including some powerful reversed sweeping. Youngs by now was also in full flow as the pair plundered the later Elmstead bowlers. Taylor rode his luck as Elmstead put him down twice in the same over when he was on 31. By now Youngs who had narrowly missed out on a century a couple of weeks before, was in sight of one again. This time he was not to be denied and he was able to show his delight when a miss-field gave him the boundary and his century. Youngs and Taylor completed the second century partnership of the afternoon before a lapse in concentration in the 45th over, saw Youngs bowled by A O’Brien for 114. Ben Shepperson (5) soon perished in the cause when he fell to a well taken catch on the boundary by O. Cook. Taylor completed his half century as the Mildenhall batsmen plundered 100 runs from 11 overs of O’Brien and Gates. Jonathon Steel (12) was the final wicket to fall when he was bowled in the last over. Mildenhall close on 286 for 4 with Taylor unbeaten on 71.
In reply Elmstead began positively taking 12 from Tom Allen’s first over. However the visitors soon struck back when O’Brien (1) went to a sharp slip catch taken by Shepperson off Steel. Greg Palmer replaced Allen and it was the latter who then took a well-judged catch in the deep to dismiss the other Elmstead opener J Butcher (25). Palmer soon got his second wicket when K Nizami (3) was neatly caught behind by Karl Holmes. Elmstead then stumbled to 57 for 4, with Palmer dismissing M Perrin (17) when he was caught by Luke Youngs. D White and P Gates fought back as they added 64 and appeared to set up a run chase for the home team. However Gates (25) gave Shepperson an easy catch off Reed and Elmsteads momentum vanished. Allen came back on and soon bowled M Mehen for a duck. He then bowled the prize wicket of White (61), who had lost patience and drove all round a well-pitched up delivery. With the score on 152, G Cook (8) went forward to Reed and was stumped by Holmes and then Allen trapped I Evans lbw on the same score. Elmsteads last pair resisted for nearly 11 overs with the prospect of an additional batting point for them, and also the possibility of denying the visitors another point. However in the 48th over M. Burle (6) drove Allen hard to Taylor at very short mid-off who clutched it into his midriff and ended the match. Adie Garnham was left not out 15 and Elmstead were all out for 174. For Mildenhall Tom Allen took 4 for 39 and Greg Palmer claimed 3 for 39
