Match report Well, I didn’t see that one coming.
Having won the toss again and inserted the opposition things were going quite well. Probably as much to do with the wicket as with the quality of our bowling, Frinton found it difficult to make much headway during the early overs and had only scored 13 after 5 overs when Comber was caught behind off Loveday. Nine overs later Frame was run out and then wickets fell at regular intervals until the 49th over when the tenth wicket fell at a modest score of 160. Pick of the bowlers was Loveday with 3 for 27 off 9 overs, closely followed by Darren Ironside with 3 for 28 off 10 overs and one each for Tris, Luke and Ashu.
After lunch we settled back to watch our boys canter home or so we thought. The opening bowler, a young lad called Renaldo Meyer who hails from South Africa, took apart our top 5 batsmen in 6 overs for 20 runs. The first to fall was Matt caught and bowled, next came Ashu and Joe with consecutive balls with the score at 20, and then Ollie and Darren in the 13th over with the score at 24. It must be said that Renaldo bowled fast and accurately, and you could tell he was a handful from the scorebox! As Joe was heard to remark later in the bar, “The young man had his day so you have to give him credit.”
There was no way back after that and although their captain took him off after 8 consecutive overs the damage was done, and we finally capitulated for 85 all out in the 26th over.
Looking at the EAPL bowling statistics later in the evening, he lies second in the wickets taken league. Guess who is top!
Wisbech next week and a three course lunch apparently. 120 overs.
