MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Sudbury CC, Suffolk 1st XI on Sat 26 Jun 2021 at 11:00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 4 wickets
Match report
For the umpteenth time this season, Ollie won the toss and asked the opposition to bat. Rashy and Tristan shared the opening overs and it wasn’t long before Rashy had Hermann caught by Nic at 1st slip. This brought Darren Batch to the wicket, the scourge of many a bowler in the Premier League for several years. Shortly after Tris got his only wicket of the afternoon despite a sustained spell of excellent bowling which just managed to evade the batsman’s bat on several occasions. There then followed 10 overs during which Batch and Parker got their eye in when out of the blue in the 21st over a tiring Rash sent down an absolute corker which moved off the pitch and removed Batch’s off stump. If you were not fielding or watching in a position to see the actual path of the ball watch the video; it was the 5th ball of the 21st over. This only served to herald the entrance of another Sudbury stalwart who has scored a few runs in his time and although ageing, is still capable of putting bowlers to the sword. Not today though. Rash ran in and produced another beauty which slightly moved away from Huggins and he nicked it to Jack behind the stumps. The opposing scorer was heard to say, “You don’t see that very often!” He was of course referring to the removal of Batch and Huggins in the same over. Those two balls tore the guts out of the opposition from which they never really recovered and wickets fell regularly after that. Nic was eventually rewarded for 17 economical overs with two late wickets for 37 and if it hadn’t been for Rashy’s 11th over Matt would have got the star bowler prize for his 3 for 4 off 5 overs particularly that of Moulton-Day who was threatening to ruin our day.
Although we had only 138 runs to win, the way we have been batting recently, this might not be a walk in the park. However, Potts had other ideas and set about the Sudbury bowlers as if he wanted to score the runs in the first few overs. This was reminiscent of another Mildenhall opener of yesteryear whose name we are not allowed to mention and who may be coming to Wamil Way next Saturday with Saffron Walden. Having scored 33 off 23 balls he skied one to Sturgeon in the deep. But with contributions from all our batsmen and with Darren almost carrying his bat through it all and finishing with a score of 40 the winning score was comfortably met. Though had the opposition managed another 50 runs or so it might have been a different story.
Tip for the skip. Next week if you win the toss put the opponents in again as one of their openers may not have arrived yet!
