Bury St Edmunds CC 1st XI v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat on Sat 24 Jul 2021 at 11:00

Match report Captain Olly won the toss and elected to bat. This was a surprise as he normally chooses to chase but this was a very good decision otherwise the game might have been all over by lunch. As it was MCC batted with a sense of decorum, no rash shots (pun intended) with the top four all getting into double figures plus 42 from the ever reliable Tristan and an entertaining cameo by Luvvers scoring 26 not out. The outstanding performance, of course, was that of Darren Ironside who occupied the crease from the start of the innings till the 46th over without giving a chance that I could see. There were a couple of interesting cameos by the opposition as well. Firstly Josh Cantrell’s bowling effort; probably the slowest bowler on view on the day and although he eventually conceded 72 runs with 3 wickets in his 18 over spell he was by far their best bowler. The worst was Matthew Doran who had a bad day at the office. He conceded 14 runs with his first 2 balls (the first a no-ball with 6 extra runs and the second another no-ball with 4 runs) and 19 by the end of his only over. The lucky recipient of most of these was Darren.
And so, at approximately 4pm, Bury entered the fray and at 6.18pm they exited it with only 98 runs, 9 of which were extras, to their name. Not very good considering their league position but I suspect there were one or two hangovers due to overindulgence the previous day when they entertained Mark Ramprakash and other England legends.
Well done Darren scoring 65 runs and 4 for 36 off 8 overs. A good all round day.

PS to the committee. The new scorebox at BSE was a revelation. Plenty of room, clean, tidy and not cluttered with non-cricketing flotsam and with two individually openable windows which enabled one to see the entire playing surface without craning one’s neck.
