MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 1 wicket
Match report
Roy of the Rovers returns.
This was the stuff that millions of boys read about in the last century when ‘Roy of the Rovers’ constantly popped up from nowhere to save his team and then with seconds to go, scored the winner. Except, that today it was not Roy but Jack and Alex who saved MCC from ignominious defeat.
However, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
For the umpteenth time Ollie won the toss and inserted the opposition. Their league position suggested that they could score 250 minimum but that wasn’t to be. Rashy and Tris opened the bowling and restricted the opps to 16 after 6 overs whereupon Potts got his hand to a snick by opener Spellman off Tris and lobbed the ball up for Nic to nick. Three overs later Darren took an easy catch in the gulley to dismiss Sam Clabburn off Rashy. A third was soon to follow when Luvvers came on and Yaseen Valli nicked one to Potts. The fourth wicket came in over 21 to Alex in his second over, again caught behind by the almost perfect Potts. And so it went on wickets falling regularly until they were all out for 151. Darren missed out this week but the rest of the bowlers shared the wickets, Nic with 3 for 32 off 10, Alex, 2 for 15 off 4, Jack 2 for 31 off 5 and Rashy with his usual 2 and Tris with the first one of the day. Overall a good performance from MCC and a total they should achieve without difficulty. Or so we thought.
Potts started off as if he had a train to catch! In the first 3 overs he hit 5 mighty fours plus 4 leg byes before letting Darren have strike. Un-characteristically, he also hit 5 off his first over, and eight off the next before handing the baton back to Potts who promptly hit another 3 fours before giving Sam Arthurton some catching practice which he accepted with glee. I suppose it had to happen but nevertheless with only 6.3 overs bowled we were 55 for 1 so in a very good position. Next over saw the end of Rashy with only 1 to his name. Three overs later , Darren already with 23 off 25 balls nicked one to 2nd slip and all of a sudden , after our fast start, we were 72 for 3 off 11 overs. No need to panic though, we have plenty of batting to come or so we thought. Nic only managed to just make double figures before he was caught behind off Stolworthy. Matt had already entered the scene but had had trouble scoring, managing only 3 in 6 overs before being adjudged lbw to Stolworthy. 93 for 5 off 18 overs, just 59 more runs needed and still with some batsmen to come.
Then in the 23rd over both Tom and Olly perished and we are 115 for 7 with the only batsman Tris to come. In the next over Jon was bowled and in the next Tris was stumped, 120 for 9 and it’s all over bar the shouting. With no disrespect to both Jack and Alex, they are in the team for their bowling not their batting hence they are 10 & 11. Well fortunately no one had bothered to tell them that so they set about their business quietly and efficiently, without fuss, not trying to hit every ball to the boundary but protecting their wicket, something which some of our middle order batters should have done perhaps. For the next 7 overs they knocked the odd single and occasional 4 as if they were born to this life until the 33rd over when all we needed was 5 to win. Sam Arthurton decided to bring back Hamby who had bowled well earlier in the innings, even if a little expensively but at quite a pace, and we feared the worse. Oh! We of little faith. First ball to Alex, whack, 4 runs and we are tied. The field comes in and Alex faces the next ball. Leather hits willow and it’s 1 run and we are over the line. Truly incredible and well done Luvvers and Crooky. Not only did you hold your nerve at the end you also got 2 wickets apiece off just a few overs.
Take a bow both of you.
