MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 2 wickets
Match report
The 2023 season started a week late thanks to the inclement weather we had been experiencing during the early months of the year. Although the sun was out, the pitch was soggy and the umpires sensibly delayed the start by a half hour to give it a bit more drying time. Nevertheless, conditions were not perfect, but we got started anyway.
We had a new young keeper, fresh from the 2s to experience and wondered how he would cope with the pressure. Well, we didn’t have long to wait and see, and the result was very encouraging; two regulation catches behind, off the bowling of Luvvers, were smartly and efficiently taken without fuss. Later, in the 46th over, off the bowling of the skipper, he pulled off a much more spectacular catch, diving so far to his right to get the ball, he disappeared off the video screen! This was also a most crucial wicket as Harry Gallian and Ben Harris had already amassed a partnership of 77 and were threatening to take the opponents score to a more competitive one than 203. After this wicket only 17 more runs were scored before they ran out of overs.
Mildenhall got off to a good start scoring at 4 an over without loss until the 16th over. At this point, Matt, who, for the first time to my knowledge, had opened the innings, and who had been batting quite beautifully, scoring 45, decided to miss the ball completely and was bowled. To his credit, he didn’t come off ranting and raving about the umpire’s decision but with the expression of “it’s a fair cop m’lord”. A sign of maturity at last. A few balls later Darren was the victim of the first of three lbw decisions but clearly did not think it was a “fair cop” and left us in the pavilion with no doubt about that! Joe came in for a few balls and decided to commit suicide and was run out. Olly was quickly caught so from 65 for no wicket, we were suddenly 109 for 4 and starting to struggle. To the rescue came Saif Zaib and Tristan who quickly guided us to 171 for 5 at which point Saif was adjudged lbw for 69 off 54 balls. Tristan steered us safely, although not without some concern, to the winning line with 6 overs to spare.
So, a satisfactory start to the season but we will have to bat better than this to emulate, or even better, last season’s performance.
Star performance: you would normally offer this to a player who took 2 for 26 off 10 overs and scored 69, but the real star performance was that of our new young star behind the stumps, Connor Cobbold. A worthy performance in Potts’ footsteps! Well done!
Next week, Witham at home. Remember last year!!!
