Match report And yet another match with Witham when having put ourselves into a winning position, we unaccountably gave the game away. This is the second time against Witham CC since they came up from the Two Counties League that we have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Admittedly under totally different circumstances but the outcome was the same.
This time we put them in and they scored 266 all out in the 64th over leaving us 56 overs to get 267. Not insurmountable and we should have no trouble. Best of the batsmen was Michael Godwin with 68 off 107 and Zak Evans with 51 off 51. Unfortunately, Loveday injured himself fielding and only managed 4 overs. This reduced the effectiveness of our bowling attack, nevertheless, we bowled well and everyone chipped in with wickets.
Matt was quickly bowled by Zak Evans but Worthy and Dom, facing some quick overs from Richards, scored at a nice pace until the 9th over when Worthy was surprisingly caught behind for 18. The score was 43 for 2 so no panic. In came Ash and he and Dom took the score to 139 in the 25th over before Ash was adjudged LBW for 33 off 55. Joe was next in and two overs later, Greg Stephens who was the pick of their bowlers, bowled Dom for 73 off 75. This was Dom’s best performance to date and heralds many more for the future. Good stuff! Olly came in and he and Joe took the score to 173 for 5 off 35 overs before he was caught. This bought the skip to the crease and he and Joe settled down and set about the bowling, looking very comfortable, taking the score to 246 off 47 overs, before Joe was caught by Matthew Wareing for 53 off 55. This partnership had secured the match for Mildenhall leaving the rest of the team, all five of them, to score 20 runs with 20 balls left.
At this point I must draw a veil over what followed. It wasn’t pretty! Suffice it to say that we failed miserably!
