Match report Sometimes you watch a game of cricket or, as I do, score, and it’s all you can do to avoid nodding off, especially on a warm day. Well, today was a nice warm one, but one full of good cricket, and not one for making up for lost sleep the night before. If you weren’t at the game and have looked at the scorecard you are probably wondering what I am going on about. Well, read on because the score card hides the drama and the highlights of cricket at its best.
The drama started before the game had begun; the opposing overseas player, an Aussie, suffered a nasty blow to the head whilst practising slip fielding and had to go to hospital for treatment. One of the other player’s dads took over in the field so if you were wondering why one of the fielders was rearing whites with black leather shoes, now you know.
Mildenhall won the toss and decided to bat. Enter our first hero, one Connor Cobbold, who opened the innings with Ben Palmer and carried his bat throughout the innings and finished undefeated with 89 off 127 balls. No.1 contender for “Man of the match”. There were other good scores too, Dominic Palmer with 53 off 84 and Tom Allen with 36 of 50. We ended our innings 236 for 4 and wondered if that would be enough.
We didn’t wonder for long; both the openers were dismissed by the Skipper caught behind in the first and fifth overs. Three overs later Ed Fletcher made a wonderfully acrobatic catch in the covers to get rid of Theo Sivyer for 16 off Jamie Allen. Not long after, Ed made two more good catches to dismiss Charlie Green and Kane Addison their skipper. Contender No.2 perhaps, or maybe it could be the Skipper who by now had three wickets to his name. At this point, Coggeshall were 64 for 6 off 21 overs and heading for defeat.
The Skipper now made a brilliant bowling change and threw the ball to little Mo. It was a kindly gesture no doubt but Coggeshall weren’t so appreciative. Mo’s first over was a maiden. Dom also bowled a maiden at the other end and then, with his next over, Mo took 3 wickets all bowled for 0 runs. In his final over he took the remaining wicket, also bowled and finished with the amazing figures of 2.2 overs, 2 maidens, 4 wickets and conceded 0 runs. Fantastic! And I bet Murty loved it as well!
So, to sum up, my man of the match is Muhammad Ubaid. Well done Mo. And well done the team for an all-round good performance and not too many wides this week”! (12)
