Match report
First surprise of the day was to see Joe Reed on the pitch, looking not a day older that when I last saw him, but much tidier! (That’s a compliment Joe.) The next surprise was to find that I was the only scorer but more of that later.
We won the toss and decided to bat. Joe faced the first over and it was a maiden. That was another surprise, although understandable, as it was the first game of the season. The next over went for several wides and a single which brought Joe to the crease and more dot balls. Connor negotiated the next over for two runs which meant Joe faced the next over. Unfortunately, this was his last as he edged the third ball to the wicketkeeper for a “duck”. We know that he is a talented batsman so look forward to better things in the future. No pressure Joe!
Luke Ellis joined Connor and they batted seemingly without any problems until Halstead’s overseas player, Tharusha Fernando, came on and bowled Luke with his 4th ball. This bought Tom Allen to the crease and he and Connor put on 68 off 108 balls before Connor was caught by R Vickery of Lewis Millions. Connor had continued his good form from last season with an accomplished 69 off 80.
Tom went on to score a half century off 98 before being adjudged LBW. There were no more scores to write home about although Murty managed his usual hurried and much enjoyed flurry towards the end. We were all out for 186. Not a bad score for the start of the season we thought.
Callum O’Connell and Harry Pritchard opened for Halstead and looked totally comfortable facing the opening salvo of 10 overs from Jamie Allen and Ben Cross, scoring 51 in the process. Then Jamie decided to bring on our secret weapon called Mo. His first ball to HP went for a leg by. His next ball seemed to mesmerise CO’C and he offered no stroke and was adjudged LBW. In his next over he had HP LBW off his first ball. Murty had come on with Mo and in his second over, had Fernando caught by Jamie Allen for 3. From coasting along at 61 for no wicket off 10 overs, Halstead were now 71 for 3 off 13. Would they panic? Unfortunately not!
The next wicket was again down to Mo who had Ryan Vickery caught by Jamie for 22 in his 9th over but by now they had scored 125 for the loss of 4 wickets and looked set for their first victory of the season and so it was.
Halstead have won this league for the last 3 seasons and look well set to win it this year. They have a good all-round team and there is no shame in this defeat for Mildenhall 2nds. Pick of the bowlers. Ubaid with 3 for 36 from 10.
If Halstead do win the league and then win the play-offs and get into the EAPL they will have to make sure they don’t start the season with all their scorers in America and having nobody who can work the equipment in the scorebox. Enough said!
