MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 8 wickets
Match report
Mildenhall 2nd XI v Braintree CC
We didn’t really need to win this match and cement Braintree’s descent to the 2nd division but, in the spirit of the game, one does one’s best every time. And so it was that we overwhelmed Braintree CC in every department and won comfortably. We bowled them out for 169 and Peter Worthington and Connor Cobbold knocked off the total without offering a single chance, at least, not from where I was viewing. And it was also appropriate that Worthy, rather than score his umpteenth century for the club, attempted to allow Connor to score his half- century. But that didn’t quite happen, and in a way, that was the right result. So well done both of them.
Now that just leaves the matter of who shall we nominate as MOTM.
Before I give you my decision, let me ask you the following question. Supposing you were only 15 and playing with lads much older than you for a prestigious cricket club, and after the first over, the captain threw the ball at you and said “Let’s see what you can do”. You would be feeling pretty nervous wouldn’t you. Your first over goes for 8 plus a wide. Not too bad. Your second over is a disaster. You bowl 8, yes 8, wides and concede a boundary with one of the good balls. The captain has to take you off but gives a consoling chat along the lines of “ have a break and I’ll bring you on again later”.
By the 17th over, Braintree are 67 for 2 , batting quite nicely, and the captain says “Ok Ben, have another go, and relax!” So you nervously take the ball and fondly look forward to the fast approaching football season! Fortunately, you bowl an excellent over composing of one wide, 2 runs and 5 dot balls. Wow! That was better wasn’t it! Your next over you claim 2 wickets, both catches taken by Heskey and JKM and no runs or extras, and almost got a hattrick!
Now that’s what I call good captaincy so my MOTM award goes to Jamie Allen, the skipper, for having faith in his players.
