Clacton on Sea 1st X1 v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat on Sat 18 Jul 2026 at 12.00 noon
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost by 8 wickets

Match report On the way to Clacton CC I was searching my aging brain trying to remember what it was,I had decided was the best thing about Clacton the last time we had the pleasure of playing there. Eventually, it dawned on me,- the best thing about Clacton is leaving it as fast as the A12 will allow. What a pig of a place. And this is probably the worst cricket ground, if you could call it that, that I have had the misfortune to attend. Let me quickly add, this is an impression of the facilities and not of the staff who run the Clubhouse. They are very good at welcoming officials immediately on arrival, quickly offering sustenance, and just making you feel very welcome from the outset. I recall it was just the same when we played there last year. 5 stars for them. But the facilities! YUK!
And as for scoring, John Stuck, their scorer, is a nice enough chap, but he could do with a lesson on how to welcome visitors, scorers in particular, and try to be a little more helpful . All I got was “there is the scoring machine, you’ll have to manage that as I have too much else to do!” No ‘ifs’ or ‘buts’, just ‘get on with it’. He had to score on his laptop to meet Playcricket regulations, but insisted on also scoring the book with a million different colours which was clearly his pride and joy. So I was left with a strange Daktronics machine, which I had seen before but had no idea how to manipulate, or the time to find out, as the players were coming out to play.
I am giving notice now that if I am still around next year and am asked to score at Clacton, I may well be unwell, on holiday or in some other way, indisposed!
Now I’ve had my little moan, I’d better say something about the game, I suppose.
This is what happened. We won the toss and decided to bat. We batted, but not very well. You could say abysmally, but I wouldn’t put it quite like that, but very close to it. There were two exceptions, Ben Cross who made 30 off 44 balls, and our new boy, Dylan Hardy, who fashioned 44 off 27. We finally scored 138 all out including 23 extras.
Incidentally, I had noticed a new face in the team (apart from Rhys’s) and assumed that he had come up from a lower team. As I learned later, he had in fact come up (or down maybe) from Sawston. CC. It would have been nice if someone, maybe the skipper, had introduced us before the game!
Back to the game! James Lee and Tom Sinclair opened for Clacton and Lee was quickly bowled by Murty for 6. Imran Sheikh who replaced him also fell soon after, caught by Ben Cross off Murty again, for 18. In came Charlie Rumistrzewicz to join Tom Sinclair and between the two of them, they ravaged the Mildenhall bowling and won the game easily.
This was a blessing in one way in that I was able to take my leave of Clacton and get back on the A12 asap!
Mistley next week chaps. We must do better.
