MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 90

Match report Mildenhall 2nd XI v Wivenhoe 1st X!
Mildenhall won the toss and decided to bat. The two Bens opened and once again, Ben Palmer wasn’t able to get going and was well caught in the slips in the 5th over for not very many. Don’t worry Ben, you’re too good a batsman for this to continue for much longer. The other Ben, Crossy that is, was nearly done for in the 13th over when, having scored only about 10, was badly dropped in the outfield. However, pulling himself together, he scored 10 off the next two balls, rubbing it in for the unlucky bowler. Well done Crossie, that’s what we like to see. By the time he was eventually out, caught by Mahajan, off the bowling of J lucking he had scored 33 off 41, with the score at 67 for 3. Tim, the cat, had already been disposed of in the 10th over for 8 off 13 but he would make up for this mishap later in the game! The next wicket was of Harry Grant in the 27th over, for 29 off 57. At this point we were roughly halfway through our overs with the score on 107 for 4. Murty came next and as usual put on a display of dogged batting and running completely belying his age, scoring 48 off 63. He was eventually c&b by Freddie Stiffell. With contributions of 16, 19, 8 and 12, from Kieron D, Adam H, Adi S, and Liam T, respectively, we finished our innings with 235 for 8, not brilliant but judging from the opponents score in our first match, probably enough. That was the game when both Peter Worthington and Harry Grant, scored centuries and coincidentally, while all this was taking place we were being distracted by the news coming from Sudbury where Worthy and Baker were causing havoc at Sudbury.

Liam and Adi opened the bowling for Mildenhall, Liam very quickly taking two wickets in his first 2 overs, leaving them reeling on 8 for 2 after 3 overs. However that brought together two batsmen of a different calibre and we were hard pressed to make any impression other than feed their greed for runs until the 22nd over when Liam again, but this time as a fielder, brilliantly caught their main protagonist and captain, Gustav McKeon inches from the boundary. You could feel the relief and delight as the rest of the team, rushed over to, lets be polite, congratulate him. The score was now 92 for 3 and 9 overs later, they lost another 4 wickets and were really reeling at 126 for 7 off 31 overs. Three overs later came the finale of the game. In the space of 9 balls bowled by Murty and Liam, Tim, “the Cat” Catley took a hat-trick of catches, the last of which defied gravity and gave the impression he was interviewing for a part in Tchaikovsky’s ‘Swan Lake’. What a shame it wasn’t on camera but for me it was the “Man of the Match” moment.

Had it not been for this surprise ending, I would have awarded man of the match to the umpire, Colin Bocking for delaying the start of the match because he had inadvertently locked Kumar, the other umpire in their dressing room!! You’ve gotta larff aintyer !

PS This is the third time this season (so far) that the opponents have turned up without a scorer and can’t be bothered to apologise or offer to help, but have to be coerced so to do. If this was the third or fourth division or maybe even the second I would probably excuse it but not the first division, where the majority of teams are 1st elevens. I think they should have a minimum of 2 points deducted from their league positions, I bet they could find somebody then!

Sorry about that, I promise not to mention it again. 😁

Oh dear! I forgot to thank Leo for his help with the scoring. Thank you Leo - see you next week.
