Match report Let’s not dwell on the result. Woolpit are a class act and it will be interesting to see how they perform against our 1st XI next season, if they beat North Runcton next week in the play -off.
Woolpit won the toss and decided to bat. Having already won the league their main purpose today was to help Merlin Stamper score the most runs ever in the league. Apparently, he only needed to score 292 runs today to achieve this ambition. Well, he failed but what an effort. After our opening attack and then our second-string attack failed to remove either batsman and, with the score on 170 after 22 overs, it was Charlie Swift’s turn to face the onslaught! In his third over, after having been carted for a couple of sixes by Stamper already, he clean bowled him! 209 for 1! Stamper had scored 108 off 76 balls, well short of his target but an impressive score nonetheless! The next wicket was that of Chris Thomas who retired unhurt, after scoring 100 off 103 balls. The score was now 245 for 1 off 33 overs. Kieron Pell and George Tillbrook took the score to 356 in the 46th over when Murty had, one caught and the other stumped. The innings closed after 50 overs with a score of 407.
Our response, to put it kindly, was rather pathetic. I suppose our “thinking” was along the lines of “Ah, well! Last game of the season. We’re never going to score 408 runs so let’s get this over and done with asap and get to the bar!”. Suffice to say, we scored a total of 150, of which Connor Cobbold scored 103 and Mr Extras 19. Nobody else even got over 9!
Man-of-the-match? Mr Stamper of course. Mildenhall’s MOTM? Connor of course.
