Hadleigh CC, Suffolk 1st XI v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat on Sat 23 Aug 2025 at 12.00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 4 wickets
Match report
If you were at the lovely cricket ground of Hadleigh CC yesterday, you might have witnessed a game of cricket that should go down in the great cricketing annals. It would not look out of place alongside the exploits of great cricketers of the past, Jim Laker, Dennis Compton, Freddie Flintoff, Gary Sobers and many more too many to name. The tragedy of it was that it wasn’t videoed so is now lost forever except in the memory of those that were there on the day. So here is my pathetic written report of what happened at Hadleigh CC yesterday, Saturday 23rd August 2025 AD.
Hadleigh CC v Mildenhall CC 2nd XI. Hadleigh won the toss and elected to bat. Ben Wallis who came in at no. 7 when the score was 40 for 5, eventually, saw the innings out unbeaten for 125. You might think that this was the innings of the day. Well, read on! Hadleigh’s total was 277 for 6 at the conclusion of 50 overs and, as far as I was concerned, would be too many for Mildenhall to score.
Cobbold and Worthington opened for Mildenhall and Connor (CC) scored a single off the first ball. Worthington (Pete) hit three boundaries off the rest of the over. CC lasted until the 9th over before he was caught for 18 off 26. At this point, Pete was on 49. Ben Cross, Tom Allen and Tom Heywood came and went and by the 18th over we were 94 for 4, with Pete on 66. Enter Murtaza Hussein. The start of our cricketing masterclass! For the next 23 overs, to the utter chagrin of Hadleigh CC, Murty and Pete took charge. About 87 minutes and 131 runs later, Murty fell to a catch, having scored a chanceless 56 runs. The score was 225 for 5 and we were now feeling that this was a match to be won rather than conceded. Jack Bowman was quickly dispatched and in came Adam Horrex, walking tall. From the start, Andrew looked as though he was determined to see Pete through to the win and so he did. He only scored 17 but that’s all he had to do, make sure Pete was there at the end and he fulfilled his role perfectly.
A few diehard Hadleigh supporters came over to say that Pete should have been stumped early on in his innings and they were right, but they were quick to add that it had been a superb display of batting. It was only after that it dawned on us that he had carried his bat through the innings.
I have been scoring for MCC for nearly ten years and this will be one of the matches I shall always remember.
The MOTM. I’ll give you a clue; there were two of them and their combined ages added up to 100! I bet that’s a record as well.
