Match report MCC 2nds v Maldon CC
What a disaster of a day and I’m not referring to the result.
I arrived later than usual for an away match because of a visit to an elderly relative on the way, and was immediately confronted by both umpires informing me that Maldon’s scorer had been taken to play for the second eleven and that I was scoring on my own. It’s bad enough for a home game to be on your own but at least you know how everything works and where it is. Added to this, my laptop decided to clean itself of dangerous “trojans” and refused to work until it did. The upshot was that I was reduced to pen and paper so that the game could commence.
We won the toss and decided to bat. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a great deal of help from my team and a few errors were made. Nothing serious, just individual scores were slightly askew, particularly the 55 awarded to Crossie and only 19 to Tim Catley. It’s not easy correcting scores during play and so at the end of the day there are a few discrepancies to the individual scores but the total was agreed with the umpires at the end of the innings. Considering there are hundreds of people being killed in wars across Europe and the Middle East , this is small beer so live with it!
The father of Martyn Coker who scored the bulk of their runs, a very nice chap called Earnest, appeared for the Maldon innings to help and things improved greatly. Maldon met our target comfortably losing 7 wickets in the process, with 67 from the aforementioned Martyn Coker and 40 from Ben Gibbons. Three wickets for Ben Cross including a very nifty caught and bowled, getting rid of Joe Hazel. However for me, the outstanding performance was that of NEW BOY Alex Collings who had figures of 6 overs, no wickets but only 9 runs conceded. He’s very young so bodes well for the future
This is the second time that I have arrived for an away match when the home scorer is on leave and I think that the powers that be should do something about it, maybe deducting points!
