“That’s Over” The Heritage project of Mildenhall Cricket Club wins National Lottery support

Mildenhall Cricket Club has received £6,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project to explore, share and celebrate the heritage of the Club. Using money raised by National Lottery players, the project will create a heritage display in the Club's pavilion to present the achievements of the Club's teams and members, researching the lives of historic Club officials and the part they played in local life.

Records exist dating back to 1778 of cricket being played by townsfolk, but the Club was formally established in 1876.  In that year a meadow greeted the eleven Gentlemen of Mildenhall for their first official match against Thetford, but the visitors' score of 99 was more than enough to ensure this long-awaited match was labelled a disaster.

The project will explore the period from 1778 to the present day, focusing mostly on the modern era. Trained volunteers will interview senior Club members and record their reminiscences. Volunteers will also gain archive skills to identify and record a range of heritage material relating to the Club, including photographs, score books and fixture cards, to produce a chronology.

Mildenhall Cricket Club is proud of being a social organisation with a strong team ethos, and the project aims to involve as wide a range of people in fun, interesting and rewarding activities.

President Tony Cornell who is heading up the project said “We are thrilled to have received support. Thanks to National Lottery players, our members and many more people will have the opportunity get involved and learn about the sporting heritage of our community”.

We would like to thank Mildenhall Museum, Mildenhall College Academy. East Anglian Premier League and Suffolk CC for their support with this project.
