Mildenhall 1XI win run fest in Cambridge

04 Jun 2018

The 1XI EAPL side made the short journey into Cambridgeshire on Saturday to take on Burwell. The home side batted first and Tom Rash struck early when he bowled Seabrook. Local legend Tim Catley was another early Rash wicket when he was LBW for 9. Griffiths then brewed a partnership with Tetley. Griffiths had made 35 before he was bowled by Pete Worthington. Summerskill only made 4 before he was LBW to Worthington. Tyron "King" Koen joined Tetley and the former Mildenhall player was able to add 30 before he was bowled by Rash. Mr. Hyde and Tetley then formed the biggest partnership of the innings. Hyde needed no special serum to reach 56 before he was run out. It was Tetley that was the main performer for the Cambridgeshire side. Tetley made 123 before he was caught and bowled by 'Magic' Matt Allen. Matt ripped out the lower order with a combination of wickets and a run out. Burwell eventually making 280 all out from their 58 overs. By all accounts it wasn't a fantastic bowling and fielding performance from the Wamil way side. Tom Rash took 3-70, Pete Worthington 2-52 and Matt Allen 4-16. Murtaza was his normal controlled self but remained wicket less.

Matt Allen was unable to continue his magic with the bat as he was bowled by King Koen for 14. Joe Reed contributed 63 off a whirlwind 54 balls. Joe's innings included 12 fours and 2 sixes. Nick Maiolo was also in a aggressive mood as he smacked his way to 69 from 61 balls including 13 fours. However, it was James Stamatis that was the star performer for Mildenhall. James hitting 100 not out from 80 balls. James' innings included 14 fours and 2 sixes. Peter Worhington gave support to James with his innings of 23 not out. Mildenhall reaching their total from 48.3 overs. Koen was the main Burwell bowler with 3-47. A good win for Mildenhall and confidence and morale should be high for the Suffolk side who have made great strides in the EAPL this season. Hopefully the Wamil Wasps will stay away this weekend when the 1XI make a welcome return back into Suffolk.

Mildenhall 4XI had a great win when they took on Melton St. Audrey. Melton batted first and no batsman was able to make a real significant contribution. Green was bowled by Josh Jones for 29. Burkitt made 33 before he was bowled by Steve Ready. M. Jackson was unable to provide a thriller as he was caught behind by CG from the bowling of Ready for 31. Burman was the top scorer with 37 not out. Melton reached 170 for 5 from 36 overs. Kiefer bowled with accuracy 9-28, Josh took 1-26 and Steve Ready took 2-42. Despite the early losses of Reuben (13) and Mick Saunders (6) Mildenhall 4XI chased down the target from only 27.3 overs. Kiefer returning to his spark(ling) best. The electrician was vigorously dismissive in his innings of 91 not out. Josh Jones finished a good all round display with 52 not out. An eight wicket win for the 4XI who take on Frinton 3XI next Saturday.

One of the great ladies games took place on Sunday at Mildenhall. The ladies side taking on Bishop Stortford. Bishop Stortford batted first and made an imposing 203 for 3 from only 20 overs. That is a challenging score in 20 overs cricket. Megan Arnold took 2 wickets for Mildenhall. S. Walker proved that the 'Sun was going to shine' with her 46. But it was Little and Wilde who dominated the Mildenhall attack. Little was eventually run out for 78. Wilde finished on 39 not out. All of the Mildenhall ladies who bowled got pounded (Lou's words not mine!) but at least Megan got 2 wickets. Things started badly for Mildenhall ladies when PP (Pippa Palmer) was caught and bowled for 0. Kim Hancock continued a good weekend for the K&K couple as she scored a very fine 36. Paige made a valuable 20 before she was run out. There are innings that come along from time to time that become legendary and will struggle to be matched in terms of quality and class. I'm fortunate enough to have seen a few over the past 30 years. Helen Atkinson's performance on Sunday for the ladies will live long in the history of the ladies team. Helen (remember this was a 20 over match) came in at number 3 and batted the full 20 overs for a sensational 117 not out. A trailblazing innings from the Mildenhall powerhouse. Helen's innings got Mildenhall so very close to the target. It was the sort innings that should win a match but sadly this was no fairytale ending as Mildenhall finished 9 runs short of their target. A fantastic game of ladies cricket that will stay with all the players for the entirety of their time playing cricket. A wonderful advert for the fun, excitement and quality cricket that the ladies game has to offer. The boundaries may have been short but the pleasure was long and satisfying for all of the spectators. Well done to both sides and all involved.

The Sunday Academy XI took on Thetford in a friendly match. Thetford batted first and Peek provided the 58 before he was bowled by Tucker. Newey made 24 before he was run out. Greyson retired on 50 not out. There were wickets for the away side for Harry Butcher, Tucker, George Howard and Skingley. Thetford finishing on 233 for 5 from 35 overs. James Stamatis was out early for the away side. James fell victim to skipper Steve Bone's ruthless 'finger of fate'. Steve removing the 1XI player for 4. Harry Butcher made a blistering 39 before he was dismissed. Nick Mailo continued his good form with 74. Steve Bone was ironically LBW for 0...John Howard made 31 in a lower order counter attack. The young side finished on 209 from 34 overs. A good effort from the young side well led by Mr. Bone. A fantastic effort from the club to get out 8 sides this weekend. Well done to all involved.
