MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB News story

Work-person like win for 1XI

13 Aug 2018

Whilst we wait for what will no doubt be an excellent match report from J(littleC). I'll take this opportunity to quickly run over the scores from this weekend.

Mildenhall 1XI made the relatively short trip to Copdock on Saturday and came away with the win. Mildenhall batted first and made a par score of 234 for 9 from 50 overs. Ben Shepperson continued his excellent form over the weekend both with the bat and on his phone (he has been in prodigious instagramming touch of late). Ben finished with 60 from 106 balls. Nick Maiolo and James Stamatis both made great starts with 29 and 25 respectively. Birthday boy Jack Loveday produced a blistering 16 ball 30 which include 2 sixes. There were three wickets a piece for Jason Pembroke and Jack Beaumont, two wickets for Oliver Stace and Chris Swallow was economical with 1-27 from his 10 overs. Copdock fell short in their chase finishing 206 for 8 from their 50 overs. Chris Swallow made 54 not out and Alex Oaxley made 44. Nick Maiolo was incredibly economical with 10 overs, 11 runs for 1 wicket. There were 2 wickets for Ben Shepperson and 3 for Tristan Blackledge. A good win for the 1XI, next week the 1XI are at home against local rivals Burwell. Please come down and support the boys if/when you can.

A much needed win for the 2XI at home against Kelvedon and Feering. Kelvedon batted first and limped to 154 all out from 44.3 overs. West was the highest scoreer with 30. 2 wickets for Alex Cruickshank, 3 for Freddie Tucker and 3 for the impressive Tom Heywood. Jack Bowman was back to form with the ball finishing with 2-14 from his 8 overs. Mildenhall started ok with 24 from Kyle Morrison and 15 from Jordan Francis. Jon Allen weighed in with 26 and Tom Heywood 17 not out but it was veteran Andrew Squire who was the main contributor with the bat. Squiz finished with 55 before he was bowled by Curtis. Mildenhall reached their target from 37 overs. Next week the 2XI are away to Copdock and OI's 2XI. A late season surge could see the 2XI at least challenge for a promotion place.

I don't have a scorecard as yet for the 3XI for their match against Wivenhoe but I can't talk through the main points of the game. I'll edit this report during the week - if anyone cares? Wivenhoe batted first on a damp looking pitch and got off to a good start. The openers cashed in on some unusally poor bowling from Martin Kingdon. Martin dragged it back later on in his spell. Wivenhoe pushed close to 200 at the close of their innings, thanks in part to some close LBW decisions that went their way. Duncan Fraser bowled well without luck but the rest of the Mildenhall attack bowled pretty loosely and it wasn't a great day in the field in total honesty. The day continued it's decent into crapdom during the Mildenhall innings. Neil Clark showed some resistance with the bat. Kiefer looked good with the bat before he gave it away playing a poor shot. There were ducks for James Taylor, Duncan Fraser and Dustin Wilder as Wivenhoe's spinners destroyed the 3XI batting. Matt Heywood batted very well and there was some late resistance from Andy Youngs. 'Arhcie' Golding having not played cricket for 5 years took 6 wickets. Mildenhall falling well short of their target. In all honesty it was a dire performance from the 3XI with some very poor shots being played. The 3XI will have to re-group quickly as next week they take on title favourites Felixstowe away from home (for the fourth week on the spin - pun intended).

Speaking of Felixstowe, the 4XI made the journey on Saturday to take on Felixstowe's 2XI. batting first Felixstowe made 188 from their 45 overs for the loss of 8 wickets. Felixstowe were going fantastically with the bat with Brown (55) and Bennett (74) but once they were out it became a family affair for Mildenhall with Kevin Boardman and Connor Cobbold taking center stage. Connor with 3 stumpings and a catch. But it was a headlining performance from Kev with 5-37 from 8 overs. Lou bowled 15 overs 1-53 and Doctor Muhammad Ubaid with 2-55 from his 12 overs. A challenging chase which Mildenhall accepted with relish and a side salad. Raeel Afaal with 25, Rhys Daltrey with 18 and Lou Handy with 24. The star batsman of the day was Reuben Handy. Reuben finsihing with 72 not out. Mildenhall chasing their target for the loss of 4 wickets off 35.5 overs. Please don't forget that Mildenhall only had 10 players for the match.

So overall a positive weekend results wise for the club with some excellent individual performances with bat and with ball. Plenty to look forward to this weekend with the season coming to a close. Please support all the teams if you can. Hopefully, we can continue to get 4 competitive teams out during this difficult holiday season.

As in victory.

P.S. Cricket sucks.

P.P.S. Only joking. Although there are times when you have driven 150 miles, fielded for 45 overs, faced 5 balls and then get bowled for a duck and you can't help but wonder why on God's green Earth do you bother.

P.P.P.S. Time for a new bat!!!!
