MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall won by 6 wickets

Match report Saturday 18th Mildenhall v Wivenhoe

Midsummer sunshine arrived early to greet the start of Mildenhalls 2009 campaign in the Two Counties Division One league. It was the case of “in with the new” as Mildenhall emerged from there newly re developed pavilion wearing a new strip and led by a new Captain. Karl Holmes lost the toss and visitors Wivenhoe elected to bat first.

James Holmes with bleached hair and suntan from a winter in Australia opened the attack for Mildenhall. The benefit of his “Down Under” trip were soon to be seen as he claimed the first three Wivenhoe wickets with just 28 on the board. Wivenhoe continued to struggle against the tight bowling of Holmes and Frannie Bester. Bester trapped Philips lbw, before Holmes grabbed a fourth wicket as Stacey edged a catch to Karl Holmes leaving the visitors on 45 for 5. Mildenhall took the opportunity to give the youngster Tymal Mills his first bowl for the first team. He showed some real pace and had the opposition hopping around. Ben Shepperson was introduced to give some variation and he soon claimed the sixth wicket when Pulford offered Holmes another catch at the wicket.. Wivenhoe then offered some resistance through W.Morgan (61) and T. Durrell (27) as they added 76. However Shepperson slower pace eventually paid off as he dismissed both and then claimed the last wicket for a 5-wicket haul as Wivenhoe were dismissed for 158. Skipper Karl Holmes had a fine afternoon, apart from leading his team well for the first time, he capped it with a good performance behind the stumps with two stumping and three catches

In reply Mildenhall made a poor start as both openers Ziaf Kulasi and Richard Cross were back in the pavilion with just 14 on the scoreboard. Bester plundered a quick 21 before being well caught. Jimmy Watson was joined by James Holmes and Mildenhall never looked back after this as they took control of the innings. They added 108 before Holmes was eventually dismissed for 53. It was left to Ben Shepperson and Watson (76*) to see Mildenhall home for a six-wicket win. D.Myers for Wivenhoe had the credible figures of 3 for 42 off 13 overs.
