Match report
Mildenhall Match reports for May 16th and 17th
The day began with Graham Thorpe cutting the ribbon to re open the redeveloped club pavilion. Mildenhall then turned to the afternoon match that saw Coggershall arriving to play a Two Counties Division One match, having defeated near neighbours Exning last week.
Karl Holmes won the toss and elected to bat on a good dry pitch. Young Alex Reynolds returned to the opening spot along with Ziaf Kulasi. They put on 33 for the first wicket before in the tenth over Reynolds drove on the up and was caught by S.Blackwell off the bowling of R.Cross for 15. Kulasi was joined by Jimmy Watson and the pair added a further 32, then Kulasi (32) edged a ball to the wicketkeeper A.Goding off C.Carter. Coggershall turned to a twin slow bowling attack introducing W.Blackwell at the river end opposite Carter. They put the breaks on the scoring rate as Richard Cross and Watson looked to accelerate. Watson survived a caught and bowled chance by Blackwell with the score on 97. Cross (20) was the next to go as he also drove on the up and was caught at midwicket by S.Blackwell off W.Blackwell, making Mildenhall 116 for 3 in the 32nd over. Fran Bester arrived to add some impetus to the innings as he and Watson began to unloosen the shackles. Watson completed his 50 in the 40th over and the partnership continued to send Mildenhall passed 200. Bester’s aggression eventually lead to his undoing when he was stumped off W. Blackwell for 41 after a partnership with Watson of 95. Having taken 100 off the last 18 overs Mildenhall closed on 219 for 5in their allotted overs.
Coggershall were faced with a Mildenhall opening attack of James Holmes (playing with three cracked ribs) and Frannie Bester. Bester struck first when he bowled R.Cross (5). A.Goding joined R.Lees and they found runs hard to come by. They had only advanced to 15 when in the 11th over Holmes caused real drama as firstly Steve Lankester hung on to a skied chance off Lees (5). Tymal Mills dived forward next ball to accept a catch off Goding (4) and then Holmes had O.Blackwell trapped lbw for 0 to complete a memorable hat trick.. This had been a lionhearted performance from the injured bowler. Coggershall had been reduced to 15 for 4. J.Rees and W.Blackwell fought back for a while adding 46. Mildenhall turned to Mills and the young quick bowler introduced some genuine quick bowling into the attack. Firstly he induced W.Blackwell (23) to offer a catch to wicket keeper Karl Holmes and then had J.Lees (16) caught in the slips as Andy Squire hung onto a breathtaking catch belying his years. Coggershall cut down to 76 for 6 offered resistance only through S.Blackwell (27) as Bester and Lankester moped up the tail with a brace of wickets a piece and Coggershall bowled out for 115. This had been another good all-round performance from the Mildenhall team.
