MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat v Easton (Sponsored by Kay & Michael Sallis) on Sat 18 Jul 2009 at 1.00pm
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost Easton won by 8 wickets
Match report
Mildenhall 2nd X1 match against Easton in a Two Counties Division Two match (Sponsored by Kay and Michael Sallis) was played despite the ground being flooded on the Friday evening after torrential rain. Unfortunately for the home side Andy Squire lost the toss and his side was asked to bat first on an old fashioned “sticky”. Mildenhalls young opening pair of Chris Baird and Alex Reynolds found batting a real test with the ball moving about. Baird was dropped in the slips in the very first over. Reynolds survived until the 6th over when he was lbw to J.Brotherton for 3. Ben Shepperson arrived at the crease and two overs later survived a frantic appeal for a catch to the keeper down the leg side. His response was to take a more aggressive manner dispatching the ball to all parts. Baird became the second wicket to fall when he played round a ball from Brother ton and was bowled for 6, leaving Mildenhall on 24 for 2.Easton missed a chance to dismiss Shepperson without addition to the score when he was dropped in the gully in the 10 the over. Shepperson carried on in his belligerent mood but Andy Squire never settled and he became Brotherton’s third victim when he was bowled for 1.Luke Turner and Shepperson had added 50 and just when it looked like Shepperson (47) would pick up a half century he pulled a ball and was caught at square leg by Cattermole off A.Barker. Jason Moore (3) offered mid on a simple catch and this left half the side out for 95. Any hope of a revival were soon dashed when firstly Luke Turner presented another easy catch and was out for 24.then Barker grabbed the wickets of Phangabantu (1) and Mills (4) cheaply. Eddie Finnis joined Adam Trett and the pair added a quick fire 21 before Finnis lost patience after hitting a boundary and drove all round the next ball and was bowled for 12. Jamie Allen was last man out when he was adjudged lbw for 7. Trett remained not out on 19. This left the home side bowled out for 146 and conceding an extra 5 overs to Easton. The “B" attack of Brotherton and Barker had shared the wickets with Barker getting 6 for 34 in 8 overs, while the economical Brotherton took 4 for 31 off 14 overs.
It always looked like it might be a “game of two halves” as the afternoon summer sunshine and a brisk wind dried the Wamil wicket. Easton by contrast to Mildenhall found batting a lot more comfortable. The home side quickies Phangabantu, Allen and Mills made little impression on the Easton batsmen. Phangabantu had one success when Huggins was caught behind by Finnis for 12, but Easton had posted three figures before Shepperson struck a second blow when he had Kimmerling nicely caught in the slips by Squire for 33. Barker joined Chorlton to compete a fine all round performance as the pair adding the remaining 47 runs to take Easton to victory. Barker was undefeated on 23 while Chorlton had topped scored with an unbeaten 63.Mildenhall 2nd X1 remained firmly rooted to the bottom of their league.
