MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost Mildenhall lost by 48 runs

Match report On the first day of the new cricket season Mildenhalls Wamil walk ground was bathed in sunshine from a cloudless azure blue sky. With the field looking immaculate from weeks of tender care from groundsman Mike Kill, everything was set for the perfect start. Sadly for the Mildenhall 1st X1 this proved to be far from the case.

In their opening fixture of the Two Counties Division One, Mildenhall won the toss and asked the visitors Coggeshall to bat first. Straight away Mildenhall introduced their new overseas coach Lennox Lwana in to the attack and with James Holmes operating from the river end they took the initial advantage. Coggeshall only advanced to 18 off the first 10 overs and with Lwana getting Neale (6) caught low down by wicketkeeper Karl Holmes in the 11th over things looked good for Mildenhall. In the 14th over Martin Taylor returning to 1st team duty for the first time in a couple or so seasons replaced Holmes .he and Lwana kept the control as Coggeshall reached 44 for1 off 20 overs. Lwana finished a tidy spell and was replaced by Steve Lankester and it was Lankester who trapped A.Goding (17) with another caught behind by Karl Homes.O.Blackwell joined Coggeshall other opener R.Jagger and the pair dug in. By the 35 over the pair had taken the total passed 100. Lankester struck for the second time when Jagger attempted to steer a ball through the slip area and was bowled for 59. Soon after J.Rees (2) fell to a catch by Lwana off Shepperson and Mildenhall were once more in control. They kept their advantage until the 45th over as Coggeshall reached 141 for 4. Then with some fine hitting led by O.Blackwell the visitors added 50 in the last 5 overs. Shepperson and Lankester picked up a wicket each during this period as the Coggeshall batsmen fell on their sword in the run chase. The away side closed on 191 for 6 with O.Blackwell undefeated on 70. At tea it had become advantage Coggeshall.

Mildenhalls reply started well enough with Chris Baugh returning to his old club and opening the innings with Alex Reynolds. They took the score to 38 with out a blemish. Coggeshall introduced W. Blackwell for the first of what proved to be two magical spells of left arm bowling. Reynolds (18) played across the line and was out lbw to Blackwell. Shepperson (0) soon departed as he chased a leg side ball and was given out caught at the wicket by J.Rees off Blackwell. Things got worse when Baugh (20) was adjudged lbw to Carter. Carter picked up his second wicket when Richard Cross (2) played forward and he too was given out lbw. Mildenhall then had half their side out for 85 when Jimmy Watson (13) was well caught by wicketkeeper Rees off P.Ward. Coggeshall then changed their bowling around and for the final time of the day Mildenhall flattered to deceive. Ziaf Kulasi and Steve Lankester added 45 with apparent ease. Kulasi was in sight of a first 50 for the season until Blackwell was re introduced and soon induced the Mildenhall batsmen to play all round one and was bowled for 46. Blackwell bowled with guile and was backed up by two superb slip catches he dismissed both James Holmes (0) and Karl Holmes (2). Martin Taylor (1) managed to hit Blackwell, unfortunately his blow went straight to hand at deep square leg. Blackwell rapped up the match when he trapped the defiant Lankester for 24. The home side were all out for 143 having lost their last 5 wickets for 13 and the man of the match Willie Blackwell finished with 7 for 36 off 14 overs.
