MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat v Little Barfield Village on Sat 08 May 2010 at 1.00 p.m.
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost Mildenhall lost by 20 runs
Match report
On a day more akin to February, Mildenhall 2nd X1 took to the field first in their Two Counties Division Three match against Little Bardfield. Light rain had been falling for several hours and was still coming down as the match started. The decision to play had been difficult to resist as a match was already underway on the adjacent pitch, where both teams were prepared to get wet.
Andy Youngs and Rhys Desborough opened the attack for Mildenhall and both found difficulty in bowling line and length because of the wet conditions. When Youngs got it right he bowled opener Welby for 8. Hymass joined Barfields other opener Hitchcock and they steadily advanced the score passed 50. Adam White replaced Desborough and having seen Hymass collect 4 after the ball went straight through the fumbling Desborough, he responded by bowling Hymass (21) in the same over. Youngs then induced Hitchcock into a square pull, only to see Steve Ready spill a straightforward catch. Hitchcock took full advantage advancing to 52 before being run out. White proved effective with his adjustment to the conditions in cutting down pace for line and length. He picked up his second wicket when he clean bowled Bass for 9, with the score on 88. This was at the half way mark in a match reduced to 40 overs per side. White got his third wicket when he struck the stumps again and sent Baker back to the pavilion having scored just 8. Youngs completed a long spell and probably against instinct in the prevailing wet conditions Captain Andy Squire turned to spin through firstly Adam Trett and then at the other end Steve Ready. While Trett did at least take 3 wickets the pair sent down 10 overs that cost a further 60 runs. This allowed Little Barfield to advance to 173 for 9 by the close of their innings. Kemp was unbeaten with 31. Mildenhall were to be commended for fielding in the rain for the whole innings.
Little Bradfield took to the field in similar conditions, but there were signs that the clouds were going higher and sure enough not long into the Mildenhall innings it finally stopped raining. Adam Trett and Richard Thurston opened for Mildenhall, Thurston had been short of runs so far this season and played and missed several times at the start of the innings. However it was Trett (3) who was out first as he shouldered arms to Graham and his off stump was knocked back. Squire came out to partner Thurston and they struggled to accelerate the score as Graham and Kemp enjoyed the improved conditions. Thurston did strike one or two cleanly, although Kemp gave him a life when he missed a caught and bowled chance. D.Bass replaced Kemp for the 16th over and with the score on 46 he bowled Thurston (22). Next ball Luke Turner (0) was hit on the toecap and was out lbw. Steve Grinling came in at number 5 and his instinct was to attack the bowling. The Mildenhall target was now to score 100 off the last 20 overs. In the chase for runs it was aggression from Squire that saw the next wicket fall when he was caught at deep square leg for 37. Grinling perished in exactly the same manner having made 26. Bass got his “Fivefer” when Baker caught Jason Moore (6) Adam White (14) and Andy Youngs (13) scampered around trying desperately to keep the home side in the match. It was to no avail as both fell in the run chase and Rhys Desborough showed a never say die attitude with an innings of 15 at the death. Bass had the last word however as he took 6 for 47 and Little Barfield restricted the home side to 153 and secured a win by 20 runs. Hopefully the sun will shine on Mildenhall team next week!
