MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat v Copford on Sat 14 Aug 2010 at 1.00 p.m.
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall won by 28 runs

Match report
On Saturday Mildenhall 1st, 3rd and 4th teams all had their matches cancelled because of heavy overnight rain.

The 2nd X1 was due to play Copford at home and with the covers being effective and drying conditions prevailing a late decision gave the go ahead for the match to be played.

Mildenhall batted first and with a slowish pitch and the ball holding up in the outfield, runs were hard to come by. Richard Cross and Alex Reynolds began tentatively; eventually Reynolds played a flurry of shot, but then was dismissed for 18 being caught by C.Reid off B.Rawson. Luke Turner was barely in before he was deceived by the pitch and offered an easy catch to Thickwell again off Rawson. Steve Grinling joined Cross and the pair edged the score passed 50. Grinling looked the batsman in form as he played shots confidently around the ground. Copford made a bowling change and it worked straight away. With his first ball C.Smith bowling left arm over induced a mistimed drive from Grinling (21) and he was caught at mid off. Adam White stroked a boundary before he too drove hard at the ball only to see it fly straight out to cover and give a catch to A.Reid, and a third wicket to Rawson. Mildenhall were 84 for 4. Lennox Lwana went in at six and he had a life when Rawson bowled him only for the umpire to call no ball. Cross and Lwana saw Mildenhalls score pass 100 in the 30th over. Next over Cross was dropped at square leg and then added salt to the wound by sending the next ball over the same square leg for 4. Cross’s grafted innings finally came to an end when he was trapped lbw on the back foot by Rawson for 33. Joe Nicol and Lwana were unable to accelerate the run rate and Nicol was next out when he was caught by E.Merry, bowled C.Smith for 8. Andy Young did a carbon copy of Whites dismissal and fell caught in the covers without troubling the scorer. Lwana broke lose and hit a huge six that sent the spectators in “Codgers Corner” diving every way. Sadly two balls later he prodded forward and was bowled by Rawson for 28. Eddie Finnis scampered a few late single before he to was caught for 8 and it was left to the last two batsmen Jon Absolon (5*) and Ben Tippett to raise the 150 mark before Tippett (3) was last man out caught by I.Catley off Measor. Mildenhall’s total of 151 looked a little light. For Copford B.Rawson finished with 6 for 61 off 15 overs.

The opening bowlers Lwana and White soon raised the Mildenhall team spirit. They both bowled ball superbly and beat the bat time after time. Ten over saw Copford making only 12 runs. By the time Youngs replaced White, Copford had advanced to 19 off 14 overs. Youngs first ball was sent flying out to cover, but despite a diving effort Lwana was unable to hold on to a catch. However Bell (10) soon gave Lwana another opportunity and this time he made light work of the catch and Youngs was rewarded with a first wicket. C.Reid and I.Catley struggled to give any impedus to the Copford innings and had only 32 runs on the board by 20 overs. Lwana finished a 10 over spell conceding only 12 runs. Jon Absalon replaced Lwana and the tight rein on Copford was maintained. Youngs finally struck again in the 27th over when he bowled Reid for 14 just after Copford had reached 50. Catley (24) was the next batsman out when in an effort to step up the scoring he mistimed a drive off Absalon only to see the ball balloon up to Luke Turner at cover. Joe Nicol put down a catch at deep mid off and for a few moments it seemed like the spark that would set Copford on their way. A bout of shots was cut short however when Youngs bowled A.Reid for 12. It was Youngs who struck again when he had Sargeant trapped lbw trying to work the ball away to leg. Copford by now were slipping well behind the required run rate. They reached 100 for the loss of 5 wickets in the 38th over. They then lost any hope of winning the match as Absolon and Youngs picked up two wickets apiece. Youngs dismissal of Rawson, caught behind by Finnis gave the Mildenhall skipper match figures of 14 overs, 6 for 49. Copford lost their last wicket when a bad call left Smith run out for 3. Copford had been dismissed for 123. Jon Absolon completed a fine performance by all the home teams bowlers in bowling 12 overs and taking 3 for 38.
