Thurston v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sun on Sun 15 Aug 2010 at 1.30. p.m.
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall won by 6 wickets
Match report
Mildenhall Sunday 2XI travelled to Thurston and much to Mildenhall’s surprise were asked to bowl first by the home skipper. The home skipper’s strange choice appeared vindicated when after 20 over’s the home side was 92 for 0. At the drinks break stand in Mildenhall skipper James Taylor had a few choice words to say to his team. The next 20 over’s saw a much improved effort from Mildenhall. John Nicholl having been introduced into the bowling attack changed the game with the key wickets of R. Sadler and T. Francis. Steve Hunt bowled a tight spell of medium pace outswing. So great was Steve’s swing that his first 4 balls were called wide. Mildenhall managed to restrict Thurston to 181 for 9 despite some inadequate fielding. A total of 8 catches were dropped by the away side.
Mildenhall’s response with the bat got off to a slow and cautious start with youngster’s Joe Nicholl and Jordan Francis laying a foundation for Mildenhall’s rotund and more aggressive middle order. The younger Francis was replaced by his father Andy who sliced, carved and scooped his way to an aggressive and much needed 43. Joe Nicholl hit a technically correct and at times fluent 27 before he was run out going for a suicidal 3rd run. Andy Francis was bowled trying to pull a half volley which led to the introduction of hard hitting young star Tahir Ahmed. Tahir showed great maturity and some considerable power in a fine innings of 21. The introduction of M. Harris to the home bowling side allowed Tahir and Taylor to strike 23 off one his over’s and ultimately seal the game for MCC. Tahir was eventually stumped attempting a Steve Hunt double twirl. There was just enough time for Taylor to complete his 50 as the real Steve Hunt came in at number 6 and hit two violent fours to finish the game. The fight to avoid relegation continues.
