MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall won by 9 wickets

Match report Report
Mildenhall travelled to Tendring Park on Sunday for a relegation dogfight with the men from just outside Colchester. Tendring could only find 10 men willing to take up the challenge of facing the in form Wamil Way outfit. Mildenhall’s acting skipper Taylor lost the toss and on a damp wicket Mildenhall were inserted to bat. After only 3 overs the heavens opened and play had to be suspended for around 45 minutes. The game was re-started and reduced to 30 overs. The toss had to take place again and this time Taylor won it and asked Tendring to bat. Tendring struggled to come to terms with the damp pitch and Mildenhall’s bowling. Housewife’s favourite and ‘Tattooed Terror’ Martin Coverdale continued his excellent bowling form. Coverdale bowled with skill and without pace for 7 accurate overs. Andy Youngs making a rare Sunday appearance was in fine form taking 3-25 off his 8 overs. Lou ‘who is 47, if you didn’t know’ Handy bowled with speed and cunning for 7 overs. Lou introduced the watching public to his new slower ball as well as older favourites like the ‘really bad’ short pitched half tracker. Benolyds ‘Young Sea Dog’ Tippett confused the batsmen with his googlies and leg breaks. Overall it was an excellent bowling and fielding effort from MCC capped off by a fine running skyer catch from Taylor towards the end of the innings. Alex Lack was again outstanding behind the stumps.
Mildenhall put their faith in experience at the top of the batting order. ‘Pistol’ Paul Thurston pulled and nudged his way to a fine 38 not out. Paul used his considerable batting ability to nullify the bowlers into submission. Andy Francis back from watching Spurs narrow and tragic defeat against Wigan was more circumspect and defensive then his aggressive opening partner. Andy playing his brand of cuts, lofted drives and swivel pulls scored 36 before being the only Mildenhall batsmen dismissed. With two games to go (one of which being the return match with Tendring Park) Mildenhall look on course to escape relegation from division 3 which will be a considerable effort considering the position the side was in earlier in the season.
