MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost Mildenhall lost by 9 runs

Match report Mildenhall journeyed to Copdock to meet an inform home side. Play was delayed for a quarter of an hour due to heavy overnight rain that had left the outfield sodden. When play got under way Copdock had elected to bat. Conditions suggested a “run fest” was not on the cards. Lennox Lwana struck in his first over bowling H.Thomas for a duck. With Tymal Mills in support at the other end the Mildenhall opening attack gave the Copdock batmen a peppering. Lwana hit the stumps again in the 8th over when he sent Copdocks other opener Gravell back to the pavilion for 12.Lwana was by then producing one of his best performances of the season. He struck timber yet again as he dismissed two more top order Copdock batmen to leave the home side on 36 for 4. Swallow and Burch recovered the innings and took the score passed 50. However both were dismissed in quick succession. Warraich replaced Lwana and bowled Burch (21). Then Swallow (26) was caught low in the slips by Steve Lankester off Joe Reed. The home side reached the half way mark in their allotted overs on 75 for 6 and perhaps wondering if they should have batted first. It was Reed and Warraich who combined to get the next wicket when Kingstone (7) lofted a catch to Reed. Copdock were on the brink of disaster at 86 for 7. Rice and East began a fight back as Mildenhall seemed to go into a “buy a wicket “ mode in order to secure maximum bowling points. The pair added 46 before it was Warraich taking the catch and Reed this time doing the bowling and Rice was out for 27. Jenkin and East added another crucial 23 runs to get Copdock passed 150. East with a well made (29) then holed out to Chris Baugh off Reed. Jenkins was allowed to take advantage of a couple of loose overs from Ben Shepperson before Captain Steve Lankester stepped up to get the last wicket with only his second ball. Jenkin remained unbeaten on 22. Copdock were mighty relieved that their last 3 wickets had double their score and they finished with 175. Mildenhall for their part had claimed maximum bowling points with the impressive Lwana taking 4 for 27.

Any thoughts that Mildenhall would dominate were soon dispelled when in his first over Jenkin had Reed (3) playing hard to a ball that loomed back to the bowler who then took a difficult high left handed sideways catch. In the same over he comprehensively beat Alex Reynolds (0) to knock back the batsmen’s off stump. Ben Shepperson offered a range of shots and looked to be leading a recovery, however he was controversially adjudged lbw to Jenkin and was out for 18. With a slow outfield and some good tight bowling from the Copdock bowlers Mildenhall were now in a dogfight. Chris Baugh ground it out and with James Holmes and they passed 50. Holmes (23) then tried to take the attack to the home side but lofted a ball from Swallow straight into the hands of Burch. Baugh’s fight ended when East finally bowled him round his legs for a defiant 26. Lankester (0) swept at his first ball received and was caught at short fine leg. Remarkably Mildenhall now found themselves in the exact position that Copdock had been in on 86 for7. Again in a mirror performance Andy Squire and Lwana raised the score to 132 before Squire’s resistance was broken and Swallow bowled him for 26. Lwana tried the aerial route but was caught on the boundary for 21 by Thomas off Jenkin. Mildenhall were 44 runs short with one wicket left. Try as they might Warraich (18*) and Mills (12*) could not produce a fairy tale finish. The Copdock bowlers, as they had done all through the innings, kept their composure and ran out winners by 9 runs. Mildenhall had the consolation of knowing their nearest rivals Wivenhoe also lost and they remain top of the Two Counties league.
