MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall won by 9 wickets

Match report Mildenhall entertained third place Wivenhoe on Saturday needing to earn two more points than Copdock to win the Two Counties Division one Championship. Wivenhoe won the toss an elected to bat in a rain affected start than saw the match reduced to 90 overs. Mildenhalls Tymal Mills struggled with the damp conditions and with his follow through and received a warning for a high ball in the very first over. His fellow Essex player Billy Godleman took full advantage striking both opening bowlers hard. He did however offer a difficult high slip chance that Chris Baugh got fingers to but could not grasp. Wivenhoes other opener C.Kelly (1) had by contrast had started quietly and he was out in the sixth over when he gloved a catch that proved this time a lot easier for Baugh to hang on to and give Lennox Lwana a wicket. Ollie Morgan joined Godleman and for a time Wivenhoe appeared to be taking the game away from Mildenhall as they raced to 70 by the 12th over. Steve Lankester switched the pace of his teams attack bringing himself on one end and Tom Westley replaced Lwana at the River end. They stemmed the run flow and Wivenhoe took another 10 overs to raise 100. Mildenhall were however unable to break the partnership and gain vital bowling points. A tight contest continued and Godleman (101) finally made it to 100 in the 29th over only to then miss time a hook and skied a catch to wicketkeeper Karl Holmes off his namesake James Holmes. This left the visitors on 130 for 2.Wivenhoe spent the rest of their 15 overs trying to up the scoring rate and losing wickets at regular intervals. Lankester grabbed a brace of wickets and Westley sent down 15 inexpensive overs to finish with 2 for 39. Suddenly with Holmes taking two more wickets it looked as if Mildenhall might just get 5 maximum bowling points. Wivenhoe just denied them and closed on 192 for 9 for Wivenhoe Ollie Morgan was second highest scorer with 37.
At the break there was disappointment for Mildenhall when news came through that Copdock had beaten Coggeshall and taken the title. So Mildenhalls innings was a bit of an anti climax for the players and spectators. However they were entertained by some majestic batting from Westley, as he became man of the match with an entertaining 71. He and his opening partner Alex Reynolds (52*) added 110 for the first wicket. Ben Shepperson then came to the crease and created an end of season fireworks display racing 50 in 24 balls (a club record) and taking 30 off Godleman in one over .He finished unbeaten on 65*. Mildenhall had beaten Wivenhoe by 9 wickets but had to settle with the leagues runners up spot.
