MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall won by 6 wickets
Match report
Match sponsored by PandF Safepac
Maldon were the visitors to Wamil Way on Saturday for Mildenhalls 1st X1 fixture in the Two Counties Division One. A Strong southeasterly wind meant yet another Saturday match of the 2012 season was being affected by the elements. Maldon batted first and were faced with batting against Mildenhalls Essex bowler Tymal Mills who had recently been measured bowling at over 91 m.p.h during an Essex game televised on Sky TV.
Jamie Glenn and Chris Harris opened up for the visitors with Glenn looking in good form and dispensing boundaries off both opening bowlers. Harris meanwhile was lucky to get off the mark when an attempted hook off Mills bounced out of the hands of Alex Reynolds. Warraich bowling into the wind had Harris edging between keeper and first slip. With the score on 31 it was Warraich who struck first for Mildenhall when Glenn (24) played a loose shot and was caught behind by Karl Holmes. Mills then bowled the hesitant Harris (7) without any addition to the score. Daniel Baigent replaced Mills at the river end, and after another couple of fumbled chances in the slip cauldron, finally saw James Holmes hang on to a catch that dismissed Neil Simpson for 5 and it was Baigent who claimed the fourth wicket when Ainscough (10) offered a simple catch to Ben Shepperson. Maldon were 72 for 4 after 25 overs. Mildenhall then introduced some spin from Azeem Ghumman into the game. He soon had Martyn Coker (4) deceived and the Maldon batsman edged into the ever safe gloves of Holmes.Maldon had reached 84 when Ghumman then trapped Neil Bannister lbw for 4,and on the same score bowled Marc Gozzett for a duck. Maldons number 3 batsman Ian Elliott together with Toby Pugh began a defiant comeback that saw Maldon pass 100 and Elliott reach 50. The Maldon pair continued their fight until with the score on 139 Elliott called for a drink. It proved a decisive moment as next ball Elliott (65) drove James Holmes straight to Steve Lankester at mid off. In the same over Holmes bowled Jack Riley for nought and then without any further addition to the score Pugh was caught in the deep by Fran Bester off Ghumman. Ghumman finished with 4 for 35 and Maldon were all out for 139.
Mildenhalls reply was always workman like as the early Maldon bowlers bowled well. Mildenhalls openers Shepperson (18) and Bester (12) both made double figures before a partnership of 89 between Ghumman and Alex Reynolds laid the foundations for victory. Maldon claimed another point when both Ghumman (64) and Reynolds (29) were both caught just before the end. It was left to Squire (8*) and Lankester (4*) to see the home side across the line for 20 more valuable points
