Exning v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat on Sat 18 Aug 2012 at 1.00 p.m
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall won by 157 runs
Match report
Mildenhall 1st X1 having created a club record of ten straight wins finally went top of the Two Counties table after last weeks win against Elmstead Grasshoppers. On Saturday they went to Exning Park to take on bottom of the table Exning.
Mildenhall batted first and a succession of boundaries saw them reach 20 off 5 overs. Ian Starling then became distraught as he saw Frans Bester dropped in the slips off his bowling. Petulance then took over as Starling then declined to bowl again during the Mildenhall innings. It was a big moment in the match as Bester made the other Exning bowlers pay a heavy price. With the score on 43, Captain Darren Hayward replaced Starling and he struggled to bowl a straight line however Ben Shepperson (20) tried to turn a wide delivery down the leg side only to loft a simple lofted catch to Lawson at square leg. Azeem Ghuuman joined Bester. Spectators were able to watch a contrast in styles as the pair built a solid partnership. Bester reached 50 with a six as runs began to flow to all corners 100 runs came up in the 20th over but by the 25th Mildenhall had passed 150. Ghuuman having reached 57 finally gave a caught and bowled chance to Tim Catley. The second wicket pair had added 138. Alex Reynolds and Bester added another 30 with Bester reaching a century. Then Reynolds attempted to keep the momentum going but played all round a delivery from Simon Lawson and was bowled for 4. Captain Steve Lankester went in at number 5 in a situation he relishes. He and Bester added 66 runs in 8 overs before a big drive at a ball from Ollie Lawson had Lankester bowled for 36. Bester blasted on reaching 150 in the 47th over. He finally fell for 161 being bowled by Tim Catley. Andy Squire raised Mildenhalls 300 with a six as he and James Holmes went big on boundaries in the last few overs. Squire made 21 and Holmes 15 as Mildenhall closed on 328 for 7. Tim Catley finished with 4 for97.
As Exning set about a reply, Mildenhall had two front line bowlers missing however Daniel Baigent stepped up to trap Tim Catley (18) when he stroked a catch straight to Squire in the gully. James Holmes removed the other opener when Woods (7) edged to man of the match Bester who hung on to a slip catch. Lawson had a life when he was bowled by a no ball of the first ball he received from Holmes. Allen and O.Lawson set about a recovery although any hope of a run chase had already gone. With the score on 64 Shepperson dismissed Allen when he top edged round the corner for Tom Allen to make the catch. Ollie Lawson and Kent Tomsett then frustrated Mildenhall as they added 73 in just fewer than 20 overs. Lankester finally threw the ball to man of the moment Bester and he had Tomsett (42) playing on and then removed his partner Lawson (42) with a caught and bowled chance. Hayward survived a first ball when Karl Holmes dived frantically forward but just failed to hang on to a catching chance. Bester however removed Hayward (5) when he bowled him and then Lankester had S.Lawson (1) adjudged LBW and Mildenhall were able to secure a fourth bowling point when Chahande (5) missed a full toss from Lankester. Defiant to the end O.Carr hit 19*, as Exnings innings closed on 171 some 150 runs short.
