MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall won by 1 wicket
Match report
Mildenhall 1st X1’s home encounter with Halstead proved to be a real nail biter. On a cold and cloudy day with conditions looking to favour bowlers Mildenhall asked their visitors to bat first. However it wasn’t the bowlers. But a good bit of fielding by Alex lack that saw Douglas-Hughes run out for 11 with just 16 on the board. Jamie Allen and AJ Warraich continued to bowl a tight line without reward and Neil Dakin and Mark Johnson edged Halstead up and passed 50 without further loss. Steve Lankester took over from Allen while James Holmes who had been restored to the side replaced Warraich for his first bowl of the season. However at the half way stage of the Halstead innings they had reached a platform of 81 for 1.In the 28th over Lankester finally induced Johnson into a lofts stroke and he was caught at deep midwicket by Alistair Younger for 25.Freddie Preston made a couple before Holmes got his first wicket and Preston was gone, lbw for 2. The patient innings of Dakin came to an end soon after when mistimed shot saw him caught by Erik Laubscher off Holmes for 56. By this time Halstead had reached 97 for 4 off 35 overs. Holmes got his third wicket when he claimed Hill (15) lbw with the score on 116. Still Halstead would not lie down as Rayner and Merry each added 23 before Holmes finally dismissed Rayner following an excellent catch in the deep by Adam Trett. In an effort to claim more bowling points Lankester turned to slow bowling from both ends and Laubscher bowled Merry. After few more lusty blows from Harding (13) and Peacock (13) Mildenhall closed things off through another superb catch by Trett and a couple of stumpings by Karl Holmes and got maximum bowling points by bowling Halstead out for 188. Both Lankester and Laubscher took 3 wickets a piece, but the pick of Mildenhalls bowlers was James Holmes taking 4 for 47 off 16 overs.
Mildenhalls reply started shakily when Alex Lack was bowled by Preston for 1.Younger was trapped lbw for 8 and it was left to Laubscher and Andy Squire to try and relaunch the Mildenhalls innings. Halstead missed a couple of hard catching opportunities as the Mildenhall pair added 50. Laubschers hard work came to an end when he tried an expansive sweep and was bowled by Harding for 48. Squire (25) raised the 100 with a searing boundary only to be dismissed straight away; he misjudged the pace of Harris and offered a well taken slip catch to Dakin. With the score on 113 Trett (6) played forward and was bowled by Harris leaving Mildenhall in the same position as their opponents had been. James Holmes made 10 before he too tried an expansive pull and was bowled by Harding. Lankester fell for 27 and at 138 for 7 and with 50 runs still needed it looked ominous for the home side. Karl Holmes chose this moment to take on the attack. He and Jamie Allen added 37,aided by a generous over costing 13 by Rayner. With the score 0n 175 Allen was caught and AJ Warraich went for a duck in the 48th. Holmes was not to be denied as he struck more boundaries and it came down to the final over with nine wickets down Mildenhall need three to win and facing was last minute call up 15 year old Jon Allen. Harding fizzed balls either side of the wickets with out response from Allen, however to the relief of Mildenhall and all their supporter, Allen majestically droved the 3rd ball through the covers and he and Holmes scamper the three runs with Allen surviving a run out appeal by the visitors. Karl Holmes remained not out with a match winning 37 runs. Mildenhall gained 20 points for their 1 wicket win.
