MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall 1st X1 won By 21 runs
Match report
Saturday saw Mildenhall 1st X1 entertain Haverhill in a Division One match of the Two Counties league. Mildenhall batted first, however it was Haverhill who had an early success. In the 5th over Frannie Bester having just been dropped at cover attempted to blast over the top of mid-off but was well caught one handed by Liam Botten off Joe Woodley for 9. Ben Shepperson joined Adam Trett and the pair patiently took the home side passed 50. With the score on 84 Trett was dismissed for a well made 33 when a ball from Neil Brunning rose sharply from the bat and Kyle Blanchard moved quickly forward, dived and caught the ball. 3 runs later and Kobus Scholtz (2) was on his way back to the pavilion when he was given out lbw to Ben Wilkins. Ryan Clark (2) soon followed when he offered another catch to Blanchard and Wilkins had his 2nd wicket. Karl Holmes and Shepperson then added 45 and appeared to be launching the Mildenhall innings. Haverhill struck back as Shepperson (63) cut a ball straight to point and was caught by Woodley off Wilkins and then Holmes (21) edged a ball from N Brunning to Gupta at slip with no addition to the score. This left Mildenhall teetering on 140 for 6. Steve Lankester and Tom Allen regained the initiative for the home side as the pitch conditions eased on the arrival of some sunshine. The pair added 90 in 15 overs that also saw Lankester get to 50. Lankester finally fell caught by Botten off Dan Poole for 51. Mildenhall continued their late charge as James Holmes added 21 in 11 balls. With 8 balls to go Allen was caught by D Poole off D.Pass having made 38. Haverhill got a 9th wicket when Duncan Fraser holed out on the last ball of the innings, by which time Mildenhall had amassed 256. For Haverhill Wilkins was the pick of their bowlers with 3 for 42.
In reply Haverhill lost opening bat Adam Dellar when he was trapped lbw to James Holmes for 4. Luke Youngs and Blanchard moved Haverhill quickly to 40 before a superb extra cover catch by Scholtz saw Blanchard (22) dismissed by Holmes. Amit Gupta came in next and gave good support to Youngs as the pair added 45. It took another piece of exceptional fielding to break the partnership, it came in a direct throw by Fraser from the boundary hitting the stumps at the bowlers end and running Gupta out for 21. With the pitch becoming even more benign Mildenhall fell back on the defensive and protected the boundaries. A Phillips and Youngs accumulated 61, however the required run rate was starting to climb. Scholtz bowled Phillips for 28. Mildenhall persisted with their defensive plan as the slow bowlers Scholtz ,Lankester and then Shepperson set the field back and were content for Haverhill to take single, Youngs for his part seemed happy for his partners to bat round him and leave them to attempt the lofted shots. Botten (13) Poole (18) and Pass (12) all fell to Shepperson in an effort to chase down the runs. Shortly before the close of the innings Youngs reached his century but his efforts were not enough as his side closed 21 runs short for the loss of 7 wickets. Shepperson finished man of the match with 3 for 44. Mildenhall collected 18 points.
