MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Sudbury on Sat 10 May 2014 at 1.00p.m.
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost Mildenhall 1st X1 lost by 6 wickets
Match report
A blustery Saturday afternoon with conditions favouring the bowlers saw visitors Sudbury have no hesitation in asking Mildenhall to bat first in their top of the table clash. Jonny Gallagher and Billy Moulton Day used the conditions admirably as Tom Westley and Adam Trett were unable to put runs on the board until the sixth over. Sudbury had their first success when Trett (2) edged a ball off Gallagher to wicketkeeper Steve O’Brien and then with 25 runs on the board Ben Shepperson (6) played a similar shot to Moulton Day and O’Brien had his second catch. Kobus Scholtz joined Westley and the pair began to get the run rate going only for Schulz to mistime a shot and was out caught by Ben Reece off James Poulson for 14. Westley having weathered the early storm began to play shots around the ground, however with 71 on the board he got an inside edge and played on and was gone bowled by Darren Batch for 46. Frannie Bester was next to go. Having battled his way to 10 he also edged a ball to O’Brien to give Moulton Day his second wicket and leave the home side on 90 for 5. Karl Holmes (11) followed 10 runs later when he was given out lbw to Mike Jones .Not for the first time this season Mildenhall were in danger of being bowled out cheaply. Tom Allen (3) was unable to offer much resistance and was also given out lbw, this time to Gallagher. Once again it was left to Steve Lankester to show some fight. He played aggressively making 44 runs before he perished in the cause and was caught by Moulton Day off Poulson. Lankester and James Holmes had added 50. Holmes carried on in the same vein, but he eventually perished in the 49th over for 29 when he was caught by Jones off Batch. Duncan Fraser (8) gave Sudbury maximum bowling points when he danced down the wicket in the last over and was stumped by O’Brien off Poulson. Mildenhall had been bowled out for 186.
Mildenhall began brightly when Westley ran out James O’Brien (2) with just 10 on the board. Nathan Poole (21) had one let off when a rare error by Karl Holmes saw a pull shot go through his gloves for four. He was not so lucky second time when he was caught by Jimmy Allen off Tom Allen. Mike Jones went out to partner Batch and the pair took complete control. Mildenhall switched their attack around using eight bowlers in an attempt to break the pair. They eventually succeeded, however not before Jones and Batch had added 104. Jones (59) lofted a straight shot to Tom Allen who hung onto it and it gave Shepperson a wicket. Mildenhall managed a second bowling point when Reece (9) was caught by Scholtz off Holmes. It was all too little too late as Batch (81*) and Matt Pears (10) knocked off the remaining 30 runs and keep Sudbury top of the league.
