MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 2nd XI - Sat v Long Melford on Sat 06 Sep 2014 at 12.30 p.m.
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall 2nd x1 won by 126 runs

Match report There was an electric atmosphere around Mildenhall’s Wamil Way cricket ground on Saturday with both the second and third teams playing for points that would make them winners of their respective divisions of the Two Counties League. With earlier September start times there was moisture around and overcast conditions that favoured bowlers.
Long Melford won the toss against Mildenhall 2nd X1 and duly asked the home team to bat. They had an early success when Gareth Boon got plenty of swing and cleaned up Steve Lankester for 2. Long Melfords tight field placing’s and sideways movement by the bowlers meant that Matt Webb and Jordan Francis found runs difficult and for the next 10 overs they were restricted to one run per over. Both young batsmen eventually showed their touch with boundaries and had taken the score to 41 before Francis (14) gave Jim Lane at midwicket a catch off James French. This brought in Andy Squire, back in the side after a holiday. Webb by now was striking the ball well and struck another couple of boundaries. Mildenhall had reached 59 when a poor call saw Webb run out for 33. Ashley Clark dropped anchor for a time, but he was done for pace by French and was bowled for 5. Squire slowly got himself going and the home team had reached 69 by the 25th over. Mildenhall then got a big let off when Squire offered a simple catch that was put down. This was the signal for an acceleration by Mildenhall. Ben Tippett (15) helped with some smart running between the wickets and this carried on with Andy Young (20) before he was adjudged lbw. Squire was finding his range at the other end as he launched a series of boundaries. Again Long Melford dropped Squire this time just inside the boundary ropes. Eddie Finnis (13*) was the last to offer support to Squire as Mildenhall having struck 120 in the last 20 overs reached 192 for 6 with Squire unbeaten with 81. This appeared to be a just a bit better than a par score.
Long Melford’s reply saw 25 come off the first 4 overs before a loose shot from Hugh Walters (5) saw Squire take the catch at first slip off Jack Lovedays bowling. The away team continued to score at 4 an over however in the 11th over with score on 41, the impressive Luke Codrington (20) edged a low catch that wicketkeeper Finnis snaffled. Long Melford having been 41 for 1 then suddenly seemed like “Rabbits in the headlight” as runs dry up with Martin Kingdon and Steve Lankester giving the batsmen little opportunity to score. Kingdon struck next when he had Billy Byfield (8) trapped lbw. Without addition to the score Joe Harvey (8) finally got hold of Lankester striking him high too deep mid-wicket only to see the ball drop into the safe hands of Ashley Clark. Two runs later and Nick Wright (8) middle a ball from Kingdon that saw Andy Young leap high to his right and hang on to a stunning one handed catch at extra cover. By now the home team could do no wrong as every attacking shot appeared to bring a wicket. Catches, two by Jordan Francis and one by Matt Webb saw Kingdon complete his 15 overs and figures of 5 for 19. Lankester picked up a second when he bowled French for a duck. Ben Tippett took the final wicket as the visitors had been dismissed for 64. For Mildenhall Loveday ended with 2 for 29 and Lankester 2 for 11. The end signalled celebrations as Mildenhall 2nd X1 had won the Two Counties Division 3 title after just one season in that Division.
