MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall 1st X1 won By 8 wickets
Match report
On Saturday Mildenhall 1st X1 took on Halstead at Wamil Way. The pitch looked a belter for batting on, much to the delight of Essex opener Tom Westley who was being afforded an opportunity to get some cricket in after a lengthy lay off with a badly damaged thumb. Unfortunately for Tom he was made to wait as Halstead won the toss and elected to bat.
The visitors had an early set back when Charlie Douglas Hughes (2) was out to a well taken slip catch by Steve Taylor off Jon Steel. Josh Wells joined Ollie Grayson and they completed a solid partnership of 60 runs before Taylor struck, trapping Wells lbw for 45. Taylor was soon involved in the third dismissal when, one run later, he bowled Grayson (20). Mildenhall continued to keep the upper hand. Captain Ben Shepperson switched his attack so as to take the pace off the ball and was rewarded when Joe Reed firstly had Dylan Verreynne (3) caught behind by wicketkeeper Luke Youngs and then Reed himself caught and bowled Harry Pritchard who made 6. At the other end Greg Palmer grabbed a wicket when Jacob Humphries (2) skied a ball to cow corner, only to see Jon Steel dive forward and claim the catch. This left Halstead on 94 for 6. Harry Veal batted with some purpose and had accumulated 27 when he chased a wide ball from Taylor’s second spell only to hit it straight Adam Trett at cover point. David Elsbury hit a massive six before being comprehensively bowled by Taylor for 9. Young Jon Allen continued to show promise as he got the ninth wicket when Jon Steel took his second catch of the innings to dismiss Joe Morris for 27. Halstead by now had got a third batting point for passing 150. Steve Taylor ensured Mildenhall got their five maximum bowling points when he clean bowled Dean Fennesey for 6. This left Halstead bowled out for 169. Aussie coach Steve Taylor had shown his all-round talents by following up his 150 runs last week by taking 5 for 43.
Mildenhall’s reply was quite clinical as in form Joe Reed and in need of some form Tom Westley compiled a partnership that was one run short of 150 runs. Reed was finally bowled by Veal for 83, having posted his 5th half century in 6 matches this season. Taylor missed out on the run chase going second ball as he edged to keeper Verreyne off Veal. It was left to Youngs (3*) to join Westley and complete the win. Westley was unbeaten on 80 in an innings that will clearly advance his rehabilitation.
