MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall 1st X1 won by 20 runs

Match report On Saturday Mildenhall 1st X1 took on forth placed Wivenhoe at Wamil Way. Conditions favoured batting with the whole match played in bright sunshine accompanied by a cool stiff breeze. Mildenhall won the toss and elected to bat first. They began cautiously, but Joe Reed (6) tried a more aggressive approach and was caught at mid-on by Louis Homewood off Greg Savill. Matt Allen then joined Steve Taylor and after a couple of scares for Allen they added 49. Allen (15) was then bowled in the 19th over by an excited Ryan Savill, leaving the home team on 60 for 2. Captain Ben Shepperson batted at four and both he and Taylor increased the run rate. The two batsmen were particularly severe on spinner Matt Durrell. Taylor reached his 50 just before the half way mark and Mildenhall reached 100 just before the 30 over point. The pair added 122 runs in just over 20 overs, with Taylor completing his first Saturday century of the season. He finally fell for a well-made 117 as he drove and was caught by Harry Burnett off Greg Savill. Shepperson meanwhile completed his half century and saw Mildenhall up to 200 before he was out lbw to Ryan Savill for a fine 52. Mildenhall were able to keep up the momentum through cameos from Steve Lankester 18, Tom Allen (18*) and Karl Holmes (12*), which helped the home team to close on 251 for 6.
Wivenhoe then showed why they are riding high in division one. They batted with real purpose. Mildenhall meanwhile were hampered by being a bowler down, when Steve Taylor was unable to take to the field because of a recurring hamstring injury. Tom Allen, however, prised the first wicket when he bowled Jordan Elliot for 13. New Zealander Dean Robinson and Matt Durrell then kept pace with the run rate of 5 an over and had moved the score along to 98 when Mirza Baig hung onto a low caught and bowled chance to dismiss Durrell for 38. Robinson completed his 50 in the 31st over. However, in the same over Savill went for one too many big shots and the large crowd saw Karl Holmes take a spectacular catch off Lankester’s bowling, as he lept three or four paces to his right and grabbed the ball inches off the ground. It was “The Squad father” Lankester’s golden arm that worked again as Robinson (57) missed timed a shot and gave Greg Palmer a catch at cover. Mildenhall were back in with a chance and when Joe Reed trapped Ryan Vickery lbw without any further addition, the visitors were left at 149 for 5 in the 35th over. Wivenhoe continued to fight on with Captain Will Morgan leading from the front. Mildenhall’s sub fielder Jem Bayes set the standard for the home team’s fielding, as they backed up the bowlers. Steve Lankester continued to flight the ball, setting the bait which Wivenhoe continued to accept. He bowled Harry Burnett for 14 and then had Morgan (22) caught at long off with Jon Steel hanging onto a ball that went “miles” up into the air. Greg Palmer had a hand in the next wickets to fall. Firstly he bowled Homewood for 11 and then shortly after he caught Ollie Morgan (20) as he lost control of a shot off Steel. Still Wivenhoe tried to scamper home but in the last over Mildenhall managed to get maximum points when Greg Savill (7) offered Palmer a 3rd catch off Baiz, leaving Mildenhall the winners by 20 runs. Lankester finished with 4 for 61 and Baig 2 for 29. Mildenhall’s season could be defined in the next couple of weeks as they take on league leading rivals Witham and Sudbury (who fought out an epic battle on Saturday).
