Match report
Mildenhall 1st X1 won the toss and inserted Sudbury in their top of the table clash on Saturday. Tom Huggins was soon into his stride and dispatched both openers to the boundary. However Jon Steel managed to produce the perfect ball and cartwheeled Huggins stumps with the score on 33. Adam Mansfield then joined Nathan Poole. Mirza Baig replaced Tom Allen in the 10th over and immediately got Poole to edge just past Squire at slip. Skipper Ben Shepperson made it a double change and brought on Peter Worthington at the Wamil Walk end. In his second over he had Poole (18) edging, and Squire at slip made no mistake this time. Sudbury were now 60 for 2 in the 13th. Darren Batch and Mansfield batted purposely and added 80 before rain caused a long delay in the 36th over. Both sides at this point would have still felt they had things under control. On resumption the Sudbury pair completed a century partnership before Mansfield cut straight to Shepperson at backward point and was out for 69. Batch completed a well-made half century but then with the score on 199, Worthington ran back passed his own run up marker to take a caught and bowled to dismiss him for 60.Worthington then had Matt Pears caught at deep square leg by Reed for 22. However Reece (21*) and Poulson (13*) continued to pick off the boundaries and enabled Sudbury to close on 242 for 5. For Mildenhall Worthington took 3 for 39 and Steel 2 for 46.
Mildenhall started confidently with Joe Reed and Worthington both beating the ring of in fielders. They had put on 25 when Reed (14) drove on the up and was caught by Pears off Huggins. Andy Squire (13) helped Worthington to bring up the 50 before miss timing a shot that sailed straight to Backler at point, off the spinner Reece. Billy Moulton Day switched ends to great effect. He clean bowled Ben Shepperson for 8 and then struck the stumps again in the same over to send Matt Allen back to the pavilion for a duck leaving Mildenhall on 73 for 4. Alarm bells rang when for the home team when Worthington (49) who had looked back to his vintage best of the last decade, gave a soft catch to Jonny Gallagher off Batch. With Huggins bowling, any real chance of victory then disappeared when Nathan Poole turned and ran out to take a superb catch over his shoulder to dismiss Lankester for 16.
Tom Allen (16) and Jon Steel (12) tried to keep things going but both fell to Reece. Sudbury soon wrapped things up .Huggins trapped Ryan Clark lbw for his third wicket, before Greg Palmer (4) was last to go caught by Poole off Jack Backler. Mildenhall were dismissed for 136 and beaten by 106 runs. With their season in danger of imploding Mildenhall will have to pick themselves up by next Saturday, as they will be playing for the bragging rights when they take on near neighbours Worlington
