MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall won by 5 wickets
Match report
Mildenhall Cricket Club reports for Saturday 18th July 2015.
On a bright sunny Saturday afternoon at Wamil Way Mildenhall 1st X1 entertained Elmstead Grasshoppers. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat. Bizarrely Elmstead lost their first wicket when Aiden O’Brien was given out obstructing the field after he had run into bowler Jon Steel who was attempting to take a catch in the centre of the wicket. Jon Butcher and Kashif Nizami then added 56 before in the 21st over Ashley Clark produced a corker to bowl Nizami for 28.His partner Butcher (31) followed soon after, two balls later he drove Jack Bowman to the long off boundary and was caught by Steve Taylor. Dan White and Mark Perrin saw up the hundred in the 30th over. White, the team’s leading run scorer had reached 16 when he too attempted a long lofted drive only to be caught in the deep by Tom Allen off the bowling of Steve Lankester. Any thoughts that Elmstead would now roll over were dispersed as Perrin and Athukorala completed half centuries. The pair added 80 before Perrin (51) was caught by Ben Shepperson off Tom Allen. Josh Elliot joined Athukorala and the pair saw Elmstead pass 200. The last two overs saw Mildenhall grab two bowling points. Athukorala was well caught at extra cover by Joe Reed off Jon Steel. Tom Allen bowled Elliott and then Graham Cook was run out on the last ball of the innings leaving Elmstead on 216 for 8. Tom Allen finished with the best bowling figures of 2 for 43.
Mildenhall welcomed back coach Steve Taylor after a lengthy hamstring injury. He opened the innings with Reed. However his return to the crease was short and he was out lbw to Athukorala for 8. Shepperson and Reed then added 82 before Shepperson (46) gave an easy catch to Cook off Nizami. This left Mildenhall on 99 for 2.Tom Allen went in at number four having been in good form with the bat recently. Together with Reed the pair added 64 before Reed was run out for a well-made 81. Lankester hit a boundary but soon after trying another big shot off O’Brien, gave Webster a catch and was out for 4. Andy Squire scored 21 as he and Allen moved Mildenhall close to victory. Squire was out however with just 3 runs needed and it was left to Matt Allen (1) to join his brother and complete the victory. Tom Allen remained unbeaten on 48. Mildenhall have a big game next week when they travel to their “bogey” team Coggeshall on Saturday having already lost at home to them.
