MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall 1st X1 won by 36 runs
Match report
At Wamil Way, Mildenhall 1st X1 were asked to bat first by their Saturday opponents Hadleigh. They began brightly adding 36 in 7 overs before a mix up in running resulted in Steve Taylor being run out for 15. Ryan Clark joined Joe Reed and they continued at a less rapid pace and had added a further 60 to the score before Reed (51) was bowled by Sam Handley in the 29th over. Captain Ben Shepperson was next to the crease and was soon into his stride. Clark was out for 28 when he was caught by Handley off Tim Rix. Tom Allen helped Shepperson get the score passed 150 before he too was out caught by Tom Newbiggings off Dom Manthorpe for 18. Jamie Allen’s seasonal debut for the 1st X1 was short lived when he was out to a stunning caught and bowled dismissal by Kyle Tanner. Meanwhile Shepperson was in full flow, striking the ball to all parts. Mildenhall raised the 200 before Jon Steel departed, bowled by Tanner for 10. Mildenhall finally closed on 214 for 7, when Ashley Clark fell to a first ball duck. Shepperson remained unbeaten on 76.
Hadleigh were soon in trouble. They found themselves unable to cope with the pace of Jon Steel and Tom Allen as they moved to 18 for 4. The highlight at this point was a brilliant slip catch by Jamie Allen to dismiss J Davey (0) and give Steel his 3rd wicket. This left Mark Simmonds and Handley to set up some resistance and they did an admirable job, adding 56 before Mildenhall turned to a slower variety of bowling and Joe Reed trapped Handley for 9. Hadleigh continued the fight back as Tanner and Simmonds put on 68, with the latter getting to a half century. However just when it looked like the visitors were poised for a run chase in the last 10 overs, Reed pulled off a wonderful caught and bowled chance to dismiss Tanner for 42. Mildenhall then began to assert themselves again ,Ben Wallis (13) was caught in the deep off Jack Bowman and then Bowman himself dived forward to catch Simmonds (66) just inches off the ground off the returning bowler Steel. Steel then completed a fine afternoon with the ball. He had Rix (3) caught behind by Ed Finnis and then trapped Callum Morrin lbw next ball to see Hadleigh dismissed for 178. Steel finished with a seasonal best of 6 for 26. Mildenhall now have more wins (12) than in last season’s campaign.
