MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost Mildenhall 1st X1 lost by 61 runs
Match report
Mildenhall X1 travelled to Wivenhoe who last weekend had defeated league leaders Sudbury. Wivenhoe batted first while Mildenhall were without two of their opening bowlers so Captain Ben Shepperson opted to use a variety of pace at one end and spin at the other. Matt Durrell and Dean Robinson were untroubled and had added 50 by the 12th over. Soon after this Mildenhall introduced Jon Allen and he got Durrell (29) to drive upishly. Steve Taylor made ground diving forward and held onto the catch. Then in the same over Allen struck again when Jordan Elliott (0) tamely lofted the ball to point and Joe Reed took the catch. Allen was once again the bowler when Ryan Vickery (7) edged sharply to Ed Finnis who held it in his gloves leaving Wivenhoe on 88 for 3. Joe Reed began a tidy spell (10 overs 1 for 29) and got the wicket of Jakob Kelly (2) when a missed time shot landed in the hands of Shepperson. Wivenhoe skipper Willie Morgan joined Robinson and found runs hard to come by as Adam Trett came on and bowled a very impressive spell, wobbling the ball he sent down 8 overs for just 19 runs. However Wivenhoe managed to progress to 145 before Robinson (74) lost patience and hit Shepperson to point where Trett hung onto the catch. Mildenhall then got a third batting point when Jack Bowman took a fine catch at short mid-wicket to see the back of Hugh Burnett for 7. Shepperson was once again the bowler. Steve Taylor came back and clean bowled Louis Homewood for a duck leaving the home team on 168 for 7. Greg Savill and Morgan saw out the remaining overs and raised the final Wivenhoe score to 190 for 7. Morgan remained unbeaten on 48. Mildenhall’s bowlers could be relatively pleased with their afternoons work. Jon Allen finished with the best figures of 3 for 30.
One week after a fine batting performance Steve Taylor (2) went early when he chased a very wide ball from Tom Durrell, sending it straight to Elliott at point. Meanwhile Reed had shown his intent by driving Greg Savill for a straight six. Things started to go wrong for the visitors when Tom Durrell bowled Shepperson (22), having got an inside edge onto his stumps. Then Reed (23) who in this innings passed 1500 runs for the season, gifted an easy caught and bowled chance to Homewood. Mildenhall had lost their season’s three top scoring batsmen with 57 on the board. Andy Squire (5) was then deceived by lowish delivery from Homewood and was out lbw. Jack Loveday (9) flattered to deceive having driving Burnett for a boundary, he dance down the wicket next ball and was stumped. The heart went out of the Mildenhall batting as they limped forward showing little aggression. Luke Turner (25) was the next to go when he drove Burnett to give an easy catch to Savill. Unable to get any impetus into the run chase Mildenhall went into freefall. Ashley Clark was bowled round his legs for 7. Adam Trett (19) and Jon Allen (2) were both needlessly run out and Jack Bowman (4) gave an easy catch to Matt Durrell to end Mildenhall’s misery. They were bowled out for 129. For Wivenhoe Matt Durrell took 4 for 13. As good as the Mildenhall bowlers had been, it was a bad day at the office for the batsmen. With the top two teams in the league to play in the next two fixtures it’s going to be a test of the metal of this young Mildenhall team.
