MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall 1st X1 won by 123 runs

Match report Mildenhall 1st X1 continued their tough run in to the end of the season with a home game against second placed Witham. Witham won the toss and invited Mildenhall to bat first. Joe Reed began positively taken three early boundaries and together with Steve Taylor they had put 50 on the board by the 11th over. The first wicket fell on 61 when Reed (36) played an expansive shot and was caught behind by Kaan Hawes off bowler Leroy Facey. Captain Ben Shepperson joined Taylor and they entertained the crowd with a show piece of batting, racking up 169 runs in 30 overs. Taylor was particularly savage on the Witham bowlers smashing 10 sixes. For the second game in a row at Mildenhall he went to his century with a six. Taylor was eventually out for 117. Tom Allen added a quick 19 and Shepperson with one eye on a century in the last over was caught for 84. Mildenhall closed on 278 for 5.
Jake Wakelin (32) helped Witham get off to a good start but then with the score on 49 he was out when a loose shot saw him caught behind by Karl Holmes off Jon Steel. Sam Cooper (3) soon departed when he was completely deceived by a ball from Tom Allen and offered another simple catch to Holmes behind the stumps. Holmes was involved again when Facey (16) edged a ball from Taylor. One run later Holmes held onto a fourth catch to yet another bowler when James Suett nicked a ball bowled by Jon Allen. By now Witham were 87 for 4 in the 22nd over. Just after Witham got passed 100, Jon Allen claimed his second wicket when Jamie Allen held a catch to dismiss Richard Green for 10. Witham by now were well behind the run rate. Having had an early let off, opener Hawes (36) who had batted resolutely was the next to go when he hit a ball from Joe Reed straight to Steel. Reed then trapped Michael Godwin for 0 and then held onto a catch off Jack Bowman to see the end of Simon Jones (29). Reed help wrap things up by trapping Michael Glynn lbw for 1. Ben Shepperson finally got into the act when he became the seventh bowler to take a wicket when he caught and bowled Pete Austin (3), leaving Witham all out for 155. Next week Mildenhall travel to league leader Sudbury.
