Braintree v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat on Sat 30 Apr 2016 at 1.00p.m.
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won Mildenhall won by 148 runs
Match report
Mildenhall 1st X1 finally got their season underway with an away fixture at newly promoted Braintree. The home side asked Mildenhall to bat first on what looked like a good early season track and a quick outfield. Joe Reed and Steve Taylor took full advantage of the wicket punishing anything loose to reach 50 by the 9th over. Reed on 44 had a let off in the 12th over when a straight forward slip catch was spilled. The opening stand had reached 82 when Taylor missed judged a call and was run out for 32. Peter Worthington made just 5 before he was out lbw to Ben Golds. Captain Ben Shepperson joined Reed who then completed his 50. Having posted Mildenhalls 100 Reed then had another life when a sharp chance to the wicketkeeper Warren Celiz went down. Reeds response was positive as he and Shepperson took control. By the 24th over Mildenhall had 150 on the board. And Reed completed his century in the next over. On the pair went, however after the score went passed 200 Shepperson drove R Spalding high and was caught in the deep by Dan Chalk for 46. Hamzah Ikram went at number 5 and making his league debut took his time to get the pace of the track. He and Reed added 46 before he tried a reverse sweep and was given out lbw to David Hale. The next over saw Reed pass 150. Reed was finally out in the 43rd over when he attempted a “showboat” shot against Josh Newman and was caught at backward short leg by Quincy Titterton for 162. Tom Allen (17) and Ziaf Kulasi (13) added quick runs before falling on their swords in the run chase. The visitors still kept up the run rate with Karl Morrison (15) and Eddie Finnis (27*) punishing a tiring Braintree attack. Mildenhall completed their 50 overs and reached 344 for 8.
Braintree made a steady start with both Chris Leech and Dean Bass took advantage of any rare short delivery. The pair reached 56 before first change Mildenhall bowler Taylor made the break through when he had Leech (23) well caught by wicketkeeper Finnis. It was Taylor again who then trapped Bass (31) lbw to get the second wicket with the score on 67. Chalk and Celiz added 32 before Kulasi got through Chalks defence and snared him lbw for 3. Reed then entered the attack and his first ball pithed short however Celiz (43) managed to hit it straight to deep square leg where Tom Allen took the catch. Morrison replaced Kulasi at the cemetery end and bowled Titterton for a duck. It then became a matter of how well Mildenhall might win the match. Reed took his second wicket soon after when Worthington took a catch to dismiss Newman (0).Dan Garner and Golds showed some resistance, however Garner (28) was deceived by Morrison and was bowled leaving Braintree on 139 for 7. Gold continued to be positive hitting hard when he could. Mildenhalls fielding which had been excellent to this point then had a couple of blemishes when both Jack Bowman and Jon Allen both failed to hold lofted shots off Reeds bowling. Ikram came back to replace Morrison and immediately struck bowling Hale for 5. Mildenhall picked up a 9th wicket in the 47th over when Worthington got a second catch to see Guy Walton out to Reed for 5. The last over of the match saw Reed wrap up a man of the match performance when he bowled Robbie Spalding (10) as the home team attempted to reach 200.
Reed finished with 4 for 36, Taylor 2 for 33 and Morrison 2 for 37. Braintree were all out for 196 and losers by 148 runs.
