Mildenhall 1st X1 took on Coggeshall at Wamil Way on Saturday. Coggeshall won the toss and elected to bat. Mildenhall struck early when the away teams captain Rob Cross (0) drove fiercely to point and was caught by Kyle Morrison off Tom Allen. Mildenhall were then put on the front foot when Lloyd Edwards (13) was dismissed through a sharp catch by Matt Allen, with his brother Tom again the bowler. Soon after Jimmy Rees (17) played a loose shot that went straight up and came down into the safe hands of Jon Allen, this time the bowler was Morrison. Coggeshall were then 32 for 3. Ollie Blackwell and Jack Simmons steadied things taking the score to 72 before Simmons (21) was clean bowled by Ziaf Kulasi. Kulasi struck again when wicketkeeper Eddie Finnis took a piercing catch to see the demise of Sam Blackwell for 8. Finnis was again in evidence when a smart stumping off Joe Reeds bowling, saw the end of O Blackwell for 27. Coggeshall lost their 7th wicket with the score on 124 when a well time throw from near the boundary by Morrison left Charlie Green (12) run out. George Blackwell (4) was then deceived in the flight by Jack Bowman and was bowled. Coggeshall lost their 9th wicket when Lorcan McCabe was run out and the home team wrapped things up when Morrison came back on to bowl Liam O’Connor, who had made a cavalier 29. Coggeshall were all out for 147. For Mildenhall the bowlers Morrison, Kulasi and Tom Allen all took 2 wickets.
In their reply Mildenhall lost last Saturdays hero Joe Reed bowled second ball by Geo: Blackwell for 4. Adam Trett joined Steve Taylor with the former having his first bat of the season. The pair added 40 before Trett (15) was bowled by Cross. This proved to be Coggeshalls last success as Ben Shepperson partnered Taylor in an unbroken stand of 107. Shepperson made a stylish 38* while Taylor was particularly savage on the away teams back up bowlers. He made 91* striking six 6’s and nine 4’s as Mildenhall cruised to an 8 wicket victory that keeps them top of the Two Counties Division One Championship.
