Mistley v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat on Sat 09 Jul 2016 at 1.00p.m.
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost Mildenhall lost by 52 runs
Match report
Having had a facile home win against Mistley earlier in the season, Mildenhall 1st X1 were hoping to cement their lead at the top of the Two Counties Division One. Bathed in hazy sunshine the Mistley ground looked as picturesque as ever. The two teams along with many spectators settled down to watch a game against the back drop of the Mistley Church where eleven teams were to spend the afternoon in a bell ringing competition. This writer wondered “For whom the bell tolls”. Mistley batted first with Graeme Butcher and Jarryd Walsh. They looked comfortable advancing to 32, then Steve Taylor produced a perfectly pitched ball that took the edge of Walsh’s bat and Ed Finnis went low to hold onto the catch and Walsh was gone for 14. James Scott joined Butcher and they added a further 44. Hamzah Ikram replaced Taylor and bowled Butcher for 19. Then in the 20th over Ikram struck again when Scott (37) was bowled not playing a shot and leaving Mistley on 87 for 3 in the 20th over. Ben Allday and Dan Goff then compiled a partnership of 52 and the home team looked to be going on to a large total. Goff (23) however took on one too many big drives and was caught at deep long off by Taylor off Ziaf Kulasi. Mistley’s middle order then collapsed in a heap as four wickets went down for just 7 runs. Joe Reed bowled S Dove for 1. He then trapped Ian Morton lbw for a duck and Kulasi bowled Jason Pembroke for 2. Allday and Tim Scott clawed things back a little adding 27 before Jon Allen bowled Allday who had top scored for his team with 47. Taylor came back and moped up the last two wickets resulting in Mildenhall claiming the maximum 5 bowling points and Mistley all out 186. Ikram, Reed and Kulasi had each picked up 2 wickets while Taylor finished with 3 for 23
Any thoughts that the Mistley score was under par were soon dispelled when Reed (5) lofted a catch to Pembroke off Tim Scott. Ben Shepperson (14) struck 3 boundaries but then upishly drove Morton to give a simple catch to J Scott at short extra cover. Luke Young joined Taylor and raised the 50 before Youngs (6) offered another easy catch to the grateful Walsh. Tim Scott soon struck again when Tom Allen (4) turned a ball square and Walsh never had to move an inch to take a fiercely struck ball. Ikram (8) kept the catching practice going when he missed timed a shot and Walsh made a third catch. Kulasi (6) then exasperated himself and the Mildenhall contingent by top edging a catch straight up and the bowler Morton safely held onto the downward ball. Without further addition Taylor (35) was adjudged lbw and Mildenhall had slumped to 87 for 7. Jon Allen (4) fared no better and gave Walsh his fourth catch of the day. Frustratingly for the visitors Kyle Morrison and Ashley Clark showed there were no demons in the pitch as they secured two more batting points adding 41 runs. Clark was finally bowled having made a mature 22. Mistley wrapped things up when Scott got his 5th wicket as he deceived Ed Finnis who was out lbw for 2. Morrison was left unbeaten on 16.Mildenhall ended all out 134. For Mistley Tim Scott took 5 for 42. Mildenhall batting for once had let them down but they remained league leaders as near rivals Wivenhoe also lost.
