MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat v Bury St Edmunds on Sat 04 Aug 2018 at 11.00a.m
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost Won By 21 runs
Match report
Mr Taylor and me try to make our reports entertaining and interesting and, occasionally, factual. But try as hard as I can I cannot think of anything remotely entertaining or funny to say about Saturday’s debacle against a side clinging on desperately to retain their place in the EAPL. Perhaps we should offer to swap positions with them, then maybe we would show some desire to win. This was a classic example of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
In the match sheet for the day I alluded to Bury’s lowly position and added that we should not be complacent as there was many a fall twixt bat and ball. I apologise profusely to Homer who actually said “inter os atque offam” which is latin for something to do with counting chickens. So at last, in my mid seventies, I have become a soothsayer. I suppose I should be happy with that. If only I had realised this a bit earlier in life!
The match also threw up the most bizarre piece of umpiring and unsportsmanship which I never expected to see in a game of cricket; not at this level anyway. Enough said!
Now come on guys, you’re not supposed to sacrifice your wicket to the cricketing gods which is what it looked like from where I sat. The idea is to get more runs than the opposition.
Next Saturday we play Copdock who, if you remember, beat us by 5 runs at Wamil Way. They took a bit of a hiding at Swardeston last week so should be ripe for the taking. But remember - inter os atque offam!
