Horsford CC v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat on Sat 13 Jul 2019 at 11.00a.m.
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Lost Mildenhall lost by 40 runs
Match report
Mildenhall won the toss and elected to bowl. A good decision as it turned out as we ran through their batsmen fairly regularly with Captain Rashy and Murty getting the lion’s share of 8 shared equally between them, with one to Ankit and the other to Tristan. The only batsman to trouble the scorers was Ryan Findlay with 57 off 117 deliveries the rest of the team managing only 120 between them. The highlight of all this was that eight of the wickets fell to catches in the field, one to steady Eddy and an LBW to Capt Rashy. As well as this there were three dropped catches in the slips but we’ll gloss over that fact! This catching practice served us well next day when at least three catches were brilliantly taken in the outfield in our T20 encounter with Swardeston CC. However I digress.
If anyone was impressed with our performance and expected our run chase to be a bit of a doddle they were about to be rudely introduced to reality. In particular they were rudely introduced to one Sadaf Hussain, a 6ft 9in athletic looking Indian fast bowler who obviously took great exception to batsmen. (If you are wondering how I know how tall he is I Googled him. Very impressive CV. )
Poor Joe, who has not been in the best of form recently, looked as if he hadn’t seen his first ball as it flew past him between bat and pad and hit middle stump or was it off stump. What does it matter! Maybe he got a feint inside edge. Never mind Joe I’m sure there is a big one just around the corner, stick with it! In came the diminutive Josh to face the music but surprise, surprise, like David as in ‘David and Goliath’ he stood tall - well fairly tall anyway - and refused to be beaten and survived the over. To be fair most of the balls went over his head and he didn’t have to duck either! However, whilst others fell around him he negotiated 52 balls scoring 24 along the way before being removed by Metcalf caught behind. Meanwhile Tristan copped one from Hussain when on 7 so Capt Rashy popped in for one ball and popped out again and all of a sudden we were 17 for 3 and 177 seemed light years away. After some stubborn resistance from Matt and Josh, and another 4 overs without further loss our tormentor was replaced by Callum Metcalf who was a bit more generous with his loose balls. However there was more trouble round the corner, one Christopher Brown of no certain age who ambled up to the wicket very much like our own Murtaza and virtually single handedly, destroyed our middle and lower order with figures of 13 overs, 1 maiden, 5 for 43. We were all out for 137 somewhat short of our modest target.
I was talking to a fellow scorer the next day at the T20 games and he said that he had seen this Sadaf fellow bowl and thought he was rubbish. So fellows apparently you were bowled out by a rubbish bowler. He looked pretty good to me but what do I know about it!
Cheers!
