Burwell v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat on Sat 08 Aug 2020 at 11:00
MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB Won by 41 runs

Match report The Mildenhall Assassin strikes.
I remember the day that Jim Laker took 19 wickets at Old Trafford in 1956. I was glued to the TV when Botham won the famous 1981 test at Headingly. The West Indian bowling attack of the eighties and nineties were unforgettable. I also remember when Roger Bannister ran the first sub-four minute mile in 1953. Well today was another of those days.
Picture the scene; it's the 39th over and with an under par score posted Mildenhall are struggling to remove the last few wickets. Tim Catley who came in at no 3 is playing beautifully stroking the bowlers all round the ground' seriously threatening to take the game away from us. With plenty of overs left who should the captain turn to. Who else, the Mildenhall assassin of course! James Turner the no.10 batsman is on strike. Up comes JB with his antelopian skip and jump ( I think the final little leap in the air is the bit that confuses the batsman) and delivers. Turner pads the ball away. The entire team shouts in unison from all points on the field, 'owzat!'. Not out says the umpire. Second ball: a swing and a miss. Third ball a gentle stroke to mid-off or thereabouts. Fourth ball a strange prod from Turner and he is clean bowled. In comes Jay Ghelani a good bowler but not known for his batting ability. Surely he wont last long providing we can keep Catley off strike. But no JB has loftier ambitions and calls to the captain "Give him a single skip!". The skip's not too happy about this but moves the field back a bit. Up skips JB and sure enough Ghelani edges the ball towards gully and the batsmen take a single. The scene is now set.
JB is prancing about like a gazelle on heat and Tim Catley is creating more tension by having the sightscreen moved. Then he is disturbed by a wasp. Finally JB skips up for his 6th ball and Catley makes the strangest stroke he has made all day and edges it to Jack Potticary. Brilliant! And what's more you can see it all happen in video here. https://mildenhall.play-cricket.com/website/results/4433656.
As regards the rest of the match not much to report really. Mildenhall won the toss and decided to bat. Batsmen came and went, some quicker than others, with only a handful of runs except Ollie who batted well for his 54 off 84 balls. Bad luck for Dom who was clean bowled by the first ball of the match. Don't worry about it Dom. Just think when you have grandchildren you can regale them with stories about how you played for Mildenhall with the Mildenhall Assassin! They will be enthralled I promise you.
Similarly none of the opposition batsmen excelled particularly except the aforementioned Tim Catley so in the end a comfortable victory for MCC. All our bowlers performed reasonably well sharing the wickets more or less equally. So, a comfortable victory but what drama!
