Saffron Walden CC 1st XI v MILDENHALL CRICKET CLUB 1st XI - Sat on Sat 17 Apr 2021 at 11:00

Match report Mildenhall 1st XI gets off to a good start by beating Saffron Walden, eventually in comfort but it wasn’t always so.
Things started well after Ollie won the toss and decided to bat. He obviously knew that the opposition fielders would find it difficult with cold hands to hang on to catches and Rashy took full advantage. Nevertheless both he and Tristan put on an accomplished 1st wicket partnership of 63 before Tristan fell having scored 25 off 25 balls. The score was 63 at the time and Rashy and Nicholas Smit moved this on to 98 before the latter fell to a simple catch. Having spent the previous ten days couped up in an Hotel in London it’s probably not surprising that he was a little out of touch. Before you could say “The Duke of Edinburgh” we were 118 for 5 having lost Potty, Darren and Rashy in quick succession.
It was time for Capt Ollie to take charge and together with Matt put on 60 off 76 balls before he was caught of Finn Karsten. Matt took over the helm and then, with the rest of the Allen family, steered us to an excellent total of 260. Matt was unbeaten totalling 71 off 77 balls - a magnificent innings and a great way to start the season.
The opposition threatened a couple of times to get the runs needed with partnerships of 78 off 89 balls by Gallian and Russell and 44 off 37 by Russell and Ecclestone. Other than that there was not much to write about. However it must be stated that the high standard of ground fielding, and no dropped catches contributed hugely to putting pressure on the opposition. Also a small bit of help with a run out which looked wrong from where I was sitting but you ‘win some you lose some’.
Finally mention must go to Nicholas’s fine bowling spell of 10 overs, 4 for 35 with an economy of 1.9.
This all bodes well for the rest of the season.
